British Deer Society condemns filming of callous acts to deer

The British Deer Society roundly condemns Channel 4’s decision to permit the broadcasting of callous acts to deer as witnessed in its recent programme Gypsy Blood on Thursday 19th January.

Of particular concern was the filming of the illegal and inhumane killing of a wild Chinese Water Deer with offences committed under the Deer Act (England and Wales) 1991, Regulatory Reform Order (Deer) 2007, Animal Welfare Act 2006, Hunting Act 2004, and Game Meat Legislation 2006.
The Society has written to Channel 4 expressing revulsion at the filming of an illegal activity which caused pain and distress to a deer in the jaws of a dog, and then showed the animal’s subsequent inhumane despatch. A complaint is being lodged with Ofcom concerning the programme’s content. The Society is also formally requesting the police to investigate an illegal act, and writing to Honda sponsors of the programme suggesting they consider their association with such a programme.

Wildlife crime is deplorable at any time, and is something which the British Deer Society has for a number of years campaigned against. The film footage only served to highlight some of the ways in which such activities are carried out, the cruelty involved and the total disregard for the welfare of wildlife.

They're a joke, we had them round the back of our work taking copper cable. Had a word with them, phoned the police who explained 'Did they have an Irish accent? yeah that vans got no tax,MOT or insurance - not registered - we've got no chance - happens all the time.' - Allowed to do what they want!!

I must say although i have alot of respect for the BDS and what they do for our stalking industry, i do not agree with them making a case against channel 4 for the showing of the above. I have watched the programme and believe, in no way, does it glorify the disgusting acts carried out by totally irresponsable people. In my opinion it only highlights wrong doings carried out by idiots, who think they are exempt from the law (and in most cases, ARE)! Although we as stalkers see every day in our jobs or stalking/hunting/shooting magazines the illegal acts carried out by these type of people, the general public does not. The public SHOULD be shown the reality of what goes on illegally within our countryside, what we have to put up with and deal with on a regular day to day basis! If channel 4 was showing a drug dealing, gang associated programe, nobody would bat an eyelid. I personally can't see the difference with the above! The public does agree that in order to keep a healthy, sustainable heard of deer, they need to be managed as they have no natural predators. The management needs to be done efficient, humane and of course LEGAL!Surely after highlighting the horrendous illegal acts carried out by the idiots on the channel 4 programme, the public will agree to protect our jobs/livelyhood in order to protect our glorious contryside, with us, first in mind taking into account the welfare of any animal??Stick together my fellow stalking friends, if we wern't doing the job we do or participating in countryside management, there would be alot more of these disgusting parasites running around OUR countryside, slipping dogs on anything that moves!!!!!!

Well said jwdeer!! I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to deer management, what was the legal position of the scenes shown before the hunting with dogs act?? Surely it was legal to take deer with dogs before labour started meddling? Did the BDS campaign with the antis to have it made illegal or did they fight against the ban? There seems to be a little bit of hypocrisy there. Maybe a little bit of class war?? Not that I advocate the actions of these people in this program, but if it had been footage of a stag hunt pre ban, done by the prince of Wales, would the BDS be so quick to criticise? Propaganda works both ways people.

Its called poaching, thats illegal and always has been. I would suggest that your playing devils advocate is a waste of time too. And, class war ?? No, I dont think so, its only human to despise such despicable behaviour as that shown on this program.

Like a man in orthopaedic shoes, I stand corrected. I always thought it had been legal. A bit ignorant I know, but as I said, I'm a bit of a noob.

Hunting deer with dogs was legal with permission. Done correctly it is humane, people with no experience would think otherwise. 1 experience dog and 1 deer was an effective way of taking deer with little if any damage to the meat. However this is now illegal. As for despicable, a matter of opinion and hands on experience.
