Electronic Portfolios for Deer Stalkers

Deer Management Qualifications (DMQ) - which awards the Deer Stalking Certificate (DSC) is introducing electronic candidate portfolios for those registering for the DSC2 from next month.

The new portfolios, developed and hosted by e-portfolio specialists OneFile, will enhance the preparation, submission and assessment of the witnessed candidate evidence that leads to the award of the DSC2. The portfolio remains a document that can continue to be used by award holders to record their development and experience as a stalker. The award criteria remain unchanged; candidates will continue to register with their chosen assessment centre and have three years in which to gather evidence.

Those already registered for the DSC2 when the electronic version goes live on October 10 will continue to use a paper-based portfolio for the rest of their three-year registration. Paper portfolios will be phased out by October 2019.

Philippa Bursey, chair of the DMQ quality assurance and development group, said: “DMQ is excited to adopt a system which is well-established in the education sector. It will make the DSC2 evidence recording and reporting process much more efficient and will allow assessors to better support and guide candidates as they work towards the award.”

I did one of my NVQ on the Onefile system, works really well, well done DMQ!

What I would like to see from an AW perspective is how we are going to set the questions and use the system, is every AW in the country going to be shown how to use it?

You should also have received an email from DMQ, which included a letter as well as a link to a documents folder on the DMQ website containing the electronic ICR and a presentation. I can't find the folder directly on the public DMQ website, so will not post it here, but it is in the email.

In the presentation it states "AW questioning of candidate and subsequent recording has been significantly reduced. A questions now is only required when indicated." So, for example, to get the candidate to demonstrate their knowledge of what actions they would take if a deer was wounded.

There is also now a Performance Criteria (PC 1.0) for verifying the Candidate's identity - another welcome move.

Was discussing this with an AW over breakfast the other morning, seems that more of the questioning is going to be carried out by the assessor.
Guess it will also be more targeted questions around the narratives, not sure who will write them up the candidate or the AW?

The AW's now need to complete a short witness note. They also now send the completed ICR's direct to the Assessor, not the Candidate, so the Candidate needs to identify their ePortfolio Assessor and inform the AW.

Also it does indeed look as though the Assessor takes on more of the questioning role, particularly when it comes to things that the candidate has perhaps not had the chance to demonstrate, such as best practice use of a deer larder (assuming the candidate has taken the carcass home or direct to the dealer), transportation, etc.

All very sensible, at least from my initial reading.

Until it's hacked.

Seriously?? If that's an honest concern I'd question why you are using this Site, or do you not consider yourself at risk here?

From your posts and your profile you've already shared far more material than would likely exist in your Portfolio - your past profession, the rifles you've bought and sold, etc.

Of course no-one should be complacent when it comes to use of technology, but there is a balance to be found.

Would it be better to stay operating under the old, cumbersome, inefficient and anachronistic system - just in case??

Well, I wouldn't use online/internet banking, and I try to use ATMs that are inside the bank.
I'm sure there are plenty of competent stalkers who are not up to speed on technology.
I don't/won't fly either.

bet it cost the same tho even though its no Paper to post around and more efficient/quicker etc

I think you're perhaps mistaking the cost of registration at the Assessment Centers, and any stalking fees you might pay, with the amount that goes to DMQ, who administer the system.

Their fee is fixed, so it would appear the new ePortfolio is an investment they have made.

You Dorset folk must be taking the level 2 something serious if you'm got to visit ATMs inside Banks and fly between stalks.

Think this may be a self defeating argument, you use the Internet ergo someone can plant a bot on your computer and find out all sorts of information about you.
Not your bank details obvs but more than enough information about you, plus driving a car is more dangerous than flying and life in its self is inherently dangerous.
To quote a line from Shawshank redemption "get busy living or get busy dying"

All very exciting but doesn't address the bottle neck between lvl1 and lvl2 or the apparent conflict in interest in some current AWs sponsoring successful level 2 candidates to themselves become AWs

if the self imposed, standardised, training and qualification is to be accepted by government as fit for purpose and to address concerns around meat entering the food chain lvl2 and AW status needs to be taken up by a much higher proportion of stalkers..IMO...

why Lv2 has nothing to do with meat entering the food chain and Lv 1 only does because half of the LANTRA Certificate required for food to enter the chain by one specific method (sale to a game dealer) The only legal required part of it all.

its a PITA DSC1 dosnt actually give you the LANTRA Certificate and its Reg Number your suposed to use on any tags its just clause 7 says you ahve met the requirements but no LANTRA Number

and you dont get the small game ticket so cant put rabbits and pigeons into the Game dealers and there is NO way of upgrading to just do the Small game module you have to pay and do the Whole LANTRA course and repeat the Common module and large game module you have already done.

BDS do it better if you want hey run the full LANTRA course and you get that cert properly and that signs off on your DSC1 as well so you dont have to repeat (time and money ) to get the full proper Meat Hygene

ive recently got my DSC1 and run into how to sell rabbits to a game handlers BASC who where the body over seeing the course do not do an upgrade course for small game (nore do anybody else i can find) and allegedly DMQ where not allowed by LANTRA to do the Small game module for DSC1

not bothered to do DSC2 there is no reason for me yet (same as Ive never bothered with the advanced Driving test by the Great I AM )

one fly is that on grant last Feb I was told that Dorset will now only open a cert before first renewal with the DSC2 no other reason or circumstance would be considered they are obviously trying it on so we shall see

You should have received an email from DMQ on 2nd Oct?
It gave details of the new system and links to guides for AW's.

Effectively, the AW does not actually use the 'Onefile' system at all!
The AW merely fills out the ICR form in my top link above and then emails it to the Assessor - that's it!
Should be a simple process which will reduce the amount of work for the AW. The workload of the Assessor does appear to have increased though.

really and here was me thinking that the entire focus of level two ICRs was around the preparation of deer you have just shot in a witnessed and practical environment .......

Game dealers will take rabbits from anyone without any certification....
half of them will take deer without any certification....

Dorset are in breach of HO guidance and have no legal authority to request either dsc1 or Dsc2 for an open certificate.

Thats as maybe but its not required at all for any legal reason only LANTRA Large game meat hygiene cert is and only to sell to a game dealer you dont need DSC1 at all

The IAM advanced Driver licence is focused at making you a better safer driver in a witnessed and practical environment but has no legal basis to give a need (do you have yours) so very few people do it

not saying either (DSC or Adv motoring) is a bad thing and would expect to learn a lot on either etc etc

I was happy doing DSC1 as some one new to Hunting Deer was an enjoyable and worthwhile thing for me to do and would recommend it to any who are starting out .

DSC2 I may or may not do in the future we will see ... however I am not hunting alone for a while so have exp friends to go thro the process practically and physically .....

lack of take up of DSC2 from DSC1 holders the reasons are fairly obvious its fairly expensive (the DMQ fee not AWs etc ) and unless you need to get a shoot ie Forestry commission who insist on it you dont need it to hunt
