Cut my finger on a bone Tuesday. No big deal till Saturday starts to swell ect. Woke today at 3.30am. Finger throbbing 3 times the size it was yeaterday and a funny looking substance oozing out.
Brain wave while in the bathroom A&E it wont be busy. Well got here at just gone 4am in the waiting room with 4 others. Be out of here within the hour. Just been informed waiting time is 3hr plus.
Good job I bought my flask. LoL.
Only seen a cleaner up to now. Maybe I should have had a slice of toast.
Cheers Andrew

Sounds nasty, hope it soon gets sorted. Been to A+E a couple of times with things like that, the worst one was a tiny rabbit scratch from netting up a few with ferrets, hardly broke the skin but a few days later my arm was going numb and shoulder getting stiff, septacemia isn't nice. Another one was a gralloching injury in the dark when I'd forgotten a torch, I know they say you're more likely to cut yourself with a blunt blade but when you do it with a razor sharp one it goes a lot deeper!

You can never be too careful. One of the farmers I've shot pigeons for got an insect bite, it got infected and had to have his arm amputated. If that's not bad enough he then got septicemia.... it was his funeral 3 weeks ago

cut my finger last monday on a blunt knive, that was before the mora arrived from mmbeatle :) . in any case, cut a 3/4" across a knuckle and to the bone whilst taking legs off a buck I shot. wrapped it up to stop the flow and headed to A&E..

4hrs later and I had to complain about the wait, then was seen after a few minutes. that was the nurse, she said 'yes, should probably be stitched,,oh you think you need an antibiotics shot"...well yes, it's deep and long and full of deer blood and hair from my hunting knife, probably no bad call ay!!!

I was quoted another 3hr wait before I could expect to see a surgeon (6hrs realistically of course...), so I told her to clean it and wrap it up as well as she could with steristrips, gauze, etc. and I'll go home and self-medicate on antibiotic leftovers for 5 days.

she winked and agreed it was probably the best way to avoid spending the night at the hospital (I had arrived at 10 AM).

anyway, I regularly cleaned it and re-bandaged it and it's now healed and fine, but by god, I could have done that all myself and not wasted half of my day!!!...argh....

in any case, the NHS, if this is the service they have to resort to, require more resources from the state, perhaps instead of bailing out fat bankers they should put some money into local projects, hospitals, care of elderly and school playgrounds.

maybe then the country would start digging its way back into a shape that we can be proud of.

BB, The only consolation I can give you is that some poor sod would be worse off than you if there was a wait that long. I should imagine that they were all in re-suss working on someone really poorly.

Either that or the Dr had either gone to sleep or had gone walkabout.

That's why Worcester Royal employs Emergency Nurse Practitioners, to deal with such minor injuries. And we all know the definition of a minor injury don't we....................One that happens to someone else!

Get well soon.

I got bitten by a insect while stalking last July, bitten on the Saturday afternoon by Sunday afternoon and I was back home the whole hand and arm had swollen up and had tracking lines up the veins. The wife took me to A&E once there they went into a bit of a flap, one Nurse follow straight away by one Doc’ follow by the consultant. They put me in a room and rushed off to fetch antibiotics by the time they had came back my body had gone into shock, they treated me for that and increased the antibiotic dosage by 3. The glands under my arm and neck all swelled up that night I was ill for a week and no fully fit for 3 weeks.

Afterwards I was speaking to a doc’ friend of mine and she said errmmm “that can turn out bad” I asked how bad? she said “game over bad”. :( Sounds like she could have been right.

Be careful as SI says.

This sounds like it could have been a birch fly bite. a friend of mine had to go to the doc's in Grantown on Spey many years ago when his hand swelled to the size of a small boxing glove. The doc immediately suggested that as the cause. a look on Google suggests the bite is really nasty...

I heard it was a reaction to not shooting any deer that weekend Thar!!

Having worked in A&E , I can see both sides of the delays and hold-ups bit. As Flytie said, if there's a resus, most of the experienced staff will be attending to the "serious" stuff and sadly this does mean a lot of delays for everyone else in the waiting room/treatment area. Often with minor injuries they'll be seen by a specialist practitioner and called back to a clinic for further check ups as required. However it was always a nice change to get a "real" case such as described - proper cuts and breaks etc rather than the usual night-time fayre of vomiting drunks/overdoses/fights/RTA's - at least you can get a good chat out them! (and find out where they've been shooting!).
No longer in A&E, but still miss some of the cut and thrust! Hope the injury is healing well.
