Total knee replacement with patela

Mine was done by a 6' 6" canadian ex-rugby player and I was in for nine days.
The others were done by one of the other Brit surgeons and they were out in four.
They were turning hip operations out in three days so my ward was a bit like a conveyor belt.

Hi Bob Hope you are over the worst of it. I have been having trouble for around four years now, op last year, out for a couple of months.Never worked, just seen consultant yesterday i'm afraid i'm going down your road. Been told if my ligaments are intact and strong enough i will get a half knee replacement but not to be surprised when i wake up to have had full knee replaced. Timescale 4 to 12 week wait, but i have said i would take a cancilation so it could be any time. Please just tell us that you are in no pain i'll not feel so bad then, made a mistake watched op on internet last night.
cheers
Jim

I had my left patella removed in 1968. I remember the pain and the physio to this day.

bloody hell didn't realize so many having things done to knees, just had my cartilage removed and still not right seeing specialist in two weeks so we will see what he says is the next step, hope you have a good recovery, wayne

Cheers lads some nice comments that brought a smile to my face, I did ask for the bit removed from behind the knee but was told it was in so bad a condition I was not allowed to have it,

Day 2 at home and it's hard work, I have a shooting instructors course at Highclere later this year so setting that up has kept me busy to a point, then ame tea time and I went down stairs, the pain was unreal, then back up here ow to watch the lat of fortatude, that done I have just taken the morphine and tramadol paracetamol all washed down with a glass of orange Duce to try and get the internals working again,

Overall it's just trying to keep things moving, the home physio is hard work and I was told it was going to be hard and they are 100% correct, I don't wish to make anyone worried as we are differant in the way our bodies handle pain,

I think with our hobby and just the general things we do every day make our joints ware out faster and when it's time to go in its to late we just need to act early and stop being big hard men, if I had the time over again I would have gone to the doctors on the first time I had problems, it may not have saved me from a new knee but I may not have needed it as early as this time in my life,

Sorry for the spelling but I'm a bit spaced out now with the pills

Respect to you all and thanks to all who have wished me well, it will help me get better with you help I'll do it right

Bob,

Best of luck with this. My father-in-law had it done at 75 and my mother at 81, and they did so well after just a few weeks of pain and rehab. FIL celebrated by going quail hunting behind the dogs that Fall. My mother is 90 and walks a mile or more every day, and swims a lot in the Summer. She has had both knees done by the same masterful surgeon and is so happy to be mobile.

bob I am now back to work after two on the same knee still gives my stick after a long walk , keep on that fizz and ice remember if you need my ice joint wrap cuff just ask feller if it hurts remember it will hurt more later if you don't keep it moving now or in the next few weeks but don't over do it as I did !! that silver thing you see when the clips come undone is part of your new knee still it makes a change from the pain they give you when it swells up  look after yourself Big man hope to see you well again .:tiphat:

as a veteran of four knew ops I can only tell you one thing

do physio like it is the only thing you have to do for the rest of your life
work to build a stronger knee and surrounding muscles

I didn't and was lazy, only doing what was required to get back up and running

it will pay of in the long run

Cheers Paul,

The hard bit for me is how tight the knee joint is, as well as the pain I'm scared shitless to bend it to far, the knee looks like a multi coloured banger in a frying pan, I know I have to keep it moving but the pain is dreadful, so I thought that a non drinking Scotsman could start drinking to nul the pain, but it will not take long to get missed and I'll just fall asleep :(.

I will have to keep going I can't let the family down or myself, hope you and the family are well sir, and just as a heads up we had well over 7000 visitors for the Easter Sunday egg hunt for charity at the castle last week,

Atb

Bob

I have two pieces of the cartilage removed from mine in a tube of formaldehyde
threatened to have them made into earings for my wife or a nice pair of cufflinks!

was surprised how big they were
one was about the size of a large pea and the other more like a large broad bean!

Wow ed that's mad, I think they could have done something for me but to be honestim just glad it's done, I know it's bbloody sore but I just can not for the life of me understand why I'm black and yellow from my ankle to the top of my hip,

The pain in the area of the main joint is ok but above and below it is unreal, I'm on th morphine now and it helps but not a lot, I have to admire those that have both done at the same time they must be real hard folk,

Bob,

Man up Bob, it's just a scratch!

Cheers rd,

Just wish the pills would do something bud, all I here is I was up and on my feet in a week well done you I said ?

If I have a winner on the national today that will cheer me up.

Bob

When i came out of hospital after having my left patella removed i could bend my knee 11 degree's. The same evening i came out of hospital my mates came round to take me out for a beer. The transport was motorbike and side car. I was pillion on the motor bike. On the way home we had a little crash that caused a fair bit of pain to my knee:doh:.
Monday and back to physio and i could bend the knee 34 degree's the physiotherapist was suprised how much i could bend my knee till i told her how it happened. She was not a happy bunny. Ah, the joys of a miss spent youth.:D

Hi Bob take it from me its worth it in the end.
I had my right knee replaced in 2008 they gave me loads of pain killers to take home as they said i would get a lot of pain, never even opened them in fact i took them to the chemists about 6 months ago to be destroyed when i was having a sort out in the cabinet...

They gave me a red silk cloth for when i was doing my exercises laid on the bed it helped the foot to slide and made it easier.
My physio was a scottish lass she told me her dad had had 2 replaced and he used to lie on the bed with a dressing gown cord round his ankle,
so than when he was doing his bending exercises he pulled on the cord to get that little bit more bend in his knee, said it helped a lot so i did the same.

I went in on the Wednesday had the op on the Thursday then Friday morning they had me walking down the corridor and up 3 stairs as soon as i did that was sent home 3 days al done...

bob,

I forgot to mention that when my mother had her knees replaced at age 81, that was 10 years ago, and she is more mobile and doing more things than she was at 75. Hope this gives you some more encouragement.
