Thread: Leupold VX-3 advice.

    Leupold VX-3 advice.

I am about to purchase a Leupold VX-3 and can't decide whether to go for the 3.5-10x40mm or the 4.5-14x40mm. They are both roughly the same size, weight and price. The 4.5-14 has the extra mag, better eye relief (it's going on a 270 WSM) but somewhat reduced FOV figures. It will mainly be used on the hill and every now and then on a high seat. If anyone has experience with these I would appreciate any advice.

    try before you buy

fussy eye relief on varying zoom IMO
    I had the 6.5-20x40 and a 4.5-14x40 VX2

    solid scopes though

I have a VX3 3.5-10x40 which came on a rifle in trade. It is very clear and sharp. Mine has what is called the Fine Duplex, and it is fine and sharp enough that 10x is sufficient to shoot anything as far as my rifles will shoot and hit anything ( like an oil can at 600 yards ). It is a very light scope to be so nice and rugged. Some of the new ones have exposed low profile elevation knobs, too.

Personally, I think that when you get over 10X, you need to have parallax adjustment.

Sorry what do you mean by fussy?

I have a 4.5-14x40 AO VariX3 on my 17 Fireball which is the same scope but the pre 2004 version.
It seldom goes above 10x usually only when zeroing.
Its has enough field of view on 10x to pick up small targets at ranges of 250yds +
I have no problems with shifting eye relief through the mag range and light transmission and contrast are excellent
Over the 3.5-10x40 at the lower mag there is hardly any noticible difference but the higher mag makes it somewhat more versatile.

I would say on the hill the 4.5-14 may be the better choice, i have a 4.5-14x56 VXL with the varmint reticule on my hmr and back along i put it on a 30-06 as a get me by scope for stalking till i got something else sorted out and it really was quite good almost to the point i nearly kept it on there other than the reticule was a bit too fine in poor light.

I dont like eye relief that changes to the point that I may have to change my cheek weld to maintain a full sight picture through the range of zoom

the VX2 4-14 was nasty for this, high mag left me with black ring obscuring a large part of the field of view on normal cheek weld
may just have been that scope but it did piss me off when I went for a quick target acquisition without realising it was wound up

I have had numerous Leupolds including a couple of 4.5-14's which were my favourite. I was very familiar with them and the rifles that they were on but occasionally someone else would use them and comment on the fussy eye relief at higher magnification. It wouldn't stop me having another one and I will be putting a 6.5-20x56 VX-L on my 7mm - '08 when it comes back from being shortened.

Personally I think the VX-III 4.5-15x50 used to be the best value scope on the market but the RRP has risen a lot over the last couple of years. If you can get a good secondhand one at around 400-500 I think it would be a great choice. I would prefer the 50mm objective over the 40mm for all round use but I would be happy to have the 40mm on a hill rifle for good daylight use.

I go with what Glynn 1 50mm Leupold is a lot better than my 40mm Leupolds in the grey VX 111's are bomb proof....Leupold incredibly popular in NZ for good reason...

Thanks for the replies, the variable eye relief does bother me. The other scope I had considered was the Minox ZA5 HD 2-10x40 which has a constant 101mm eye relief. Where to buy though?
