Is there really any need for a 12 Bore...?

One might infer from this that to get reliable pigeon-death patterns of 130 shot in a 30" circle from 1oz of 6s at 65 yds, the 28bore would have to be shooting 50% into the circle at that range.
From the theoretical tables, we see that a full-choke can normally just about manage that at 50yds: though I sometimes wonder whether these tables are based on experiments done before shot-cups and cushioned wads reduced the mutilation of pellets in the bore, and might therefore be rather worse than our modern gear can achieve? That might mean that we can manage at 65yds what our fathers could expect at 50yds.

Further, it seems that at 65yds the striking energy of a pellet of 6 would just about pass the 0.5ftlb mark specified for a small bird: we just need to be sure we can get two or more of them into it.
