Looking into rifles. Scope wanted 6 x 42

Hi I wouldn't say I was new to rifle shooting but most of my experience is in the shotgun world in particular 12G. This forum was recommended by a friend as a way to increase my knowledge in particular to rifle scopes with the intention of buying one for a Cz455 .22lr which I intend to purchase. I reside in the UK.

Sure you'll get plenty of opinions but I use a Simmons Whitetail Classic on my .22lr.

Cheers I am leaning towards Schmidt and Bender and Swarovski. Probably try and get a good secondhand scope. I have just missed out on a couple already. What is the optics like and reticle etc ?

Hello. Best to post this question in the Equipment & Accessories forum.

I use a 6x42 on one of my .22s, for practice similar to my centerfire rifles with the same sort of scope and reticles. This works for long shots, because the parallax is set for 100 yards. But a dedicated .22 scope with parallax set at 50 yards, or one with parallax adjustment, will give more precision accuracy, especially short ranges, indoors, etc. You don't need to spend a bunch of money, because you are not shooting at 500 yards. There are great scopes for .22s, starting at $50.00 USD, some with bullet drop compensation reticles.

    Simmons .22 Mag 3-9x32.
    Simmons .22 Mag with AO.
Hawke 2-7x32 and 2-7x32 AO with Mil Dot.
Bushnell Banner 4-12x32 AO for .22 LR Turrets
Bushnell Banner 3.5-10x36AO model, too, which is a nicer size for a .22 LR
    Weaver 2-7x28 Rimfire
    Leupold Rimfire
Burris Droptine 2-7x35 with BDC reticle for .22LR, .22 Mag and .17 HMR.
Burris MSR 3-9x40mm .22 LR scope
    Nikon P-22 3-9x40mm with BDC 150 reticle
Nikon Prohunter 3-9x40 EFR with AO

Thanks that is quite useful. However I am leaning towards buying once and would like to pick up something which I could use for a stalking rifle later on possibly . I like the idea of a fixed magnification scope . I looked through a Swarovski 6 x42 and 8 x 56 the other day on a friends setups. I totally preferred the 6 x 42 in relation to the ranges that we would be initially shooting for the quick eye relief pick up on the site.

I have a 6x42 on one of my .22s, which matches one on a .308, and on a .223. It is great for practice.

But not all 6x42, or other centerfire scopes, will work well on a .22, because the parallax is set for 100 yards on centerfire scopes, and 50 yards on rimfires.

A variable power scope with adjustable objective will work like a champ on a .22, and on a centerfire. Just set it on 6x if you want practice with the same power as your centerfire scope. That Leupold 3-9x33AO is a premium one, the Nikon Prohunter EFR 3-9x40AO is another, but now you are getting into scopes which are large for a .22.
    Swift 4-12x40AO
Bushnell Ultra HD 3-9x40 Side Focus.

A smaller, dedicated .22 scope, like the Burris Droptine 2-7x35 Rimfire, the Nikon 2-7x32 Rimfire with turrets and BDC 150 reticle, Bushnell 3-9x36AO with turrets for the .22, will be more in scale and work from close range to 200 yards. You don't need large lenses and high power. But you do want a sharp and pretty fine reticle for .22 at long range, as the targets are small, and you don't want a fat crosshair which obscures the target.
