They look like harvest mites to me, my dog has had them a few times from our local woods, they lie in wait in the long grass then attach them selves to a passing animal feed of the host then drop off. They tend to head for areas with not much fur, eg tummy and around the muzzle.
Maybe he grew the beard to hide his dodgy jaw line self conscious little fellow. Sorry warped sense of humour
I will second the harvest mites I believe mice are their favourite host my dog had them once.
