Larsen traps

How much of the effectiveness of the trap is based on having a call bird?
I am thinking about building a Larsen type trap to take care of the magpies in the garden.
I haven't checked the legislation but I am pretty sure that use of a call bird would be illegal here.
I am thinking that it would be reasonably effective just bartender with food?

I would guess that about 90% of catches rely on a call bird. If you set a Larsen around chickens and bait with eggs and scraps you might get lucky. But the Larsen relies very much on territorial aggression to get birds to enter the trap.

I am thinking of this, too, but would love to know how to get the FIRST bird in the trap! Are eggs and scraps the most consistent?

Rumour has it,before it became illegal in this country, putting a mirror inside the set trap and the bait on the outside used to work a treat.Maybee your laws might let you try it.
