    Spotting Scope Recommendations

Evening chaps - need some advice please....

Need to buy a spotting scope for field target range use - max distance 300 meters

Those of you who have and use them, please can you advise what you've got and how you get on with them? Anyone use Kowa, Zeiss, Pentax?

Am quite happy to go second hand (have a good optics shop nearby) with a budget of circa 500 (or more if the right one comes up - or less if I don't need to shell out that much)

    Many thanks in advance.......
For Gods sake - don't tell her how much I've spent

Used Equipment - English Cley Spy

This is a very small selection of the used kit that they have in stock.

Kowa Prominar - Excellent optics. Compare favourably against Swaro, especially 2nd hand they are great value. Come in straight & angled format & different objective diameters.

With any scope at 300 yards you will be borderline on bullet hole spotting with any scope - especially the smaller calibres.

A solid tripod makes for best vision. The big Manfrotto models are good & solidly built, --- again second hand are excellent value.

    Low contrast light conditions
    Contre-jour (into the sun)
Type of target on which you are making holes
    Wind (wobbles scope)
    your eyesight

All the above influence whether you will be able to see holes at 300yds.

I can see 6mm (.243) holes at 300yds with my Leupold 15-45x 60mm (Chinese-made, BTW) scope at 45x IN GOOD CONDITIONS but no chance if not. It's obviously easier with .308 and .45-70!

A "quality-brand" pukka secondhand scope (60x min) will probably be ok for .204 at 300yd in good conditions but will still struggle when factors listed above aren't favourable. I'd favour Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski but you will struggle to find one under 500. I have no experience of Pentax, Kowa or Opticron. For shooting prone I would prefer an angled design (for most applications, actually.)

    Good luck.

Thanks for the above - I'm currently looking at a 2nd hand Kowa TS611 with a 30x wide angle eyepiece - looks tidy and comes with case and tripod (100 notes).

Most range work will be 100-200 - the odd occasional 300 efforts on good days when I've got the sheep off the adjoining field - will the 30x be good enough for .204 (smallest) out to 200?
