Ive been out stalking a few times in the last few weeks and ive seen a few roe bucks chasing does as if they were rutting or about to. ive even seen them whilest driveing to scotland at the side of the road. it seems very early for the rut to start. has any one else notest this?

Its funny you should mention that as I saw a "Roe Circle" around one the trees on my permission on the weekend and briefly wondered what was going on then discounted it as too early.

Maybe something is going on.

for the last month iv noticed the same bucks chasing bucks plenty of that wich is normal keeping teratory but have seen bucks chasing doe's as if in peak rut must must be those new lick blocks mixed with viagra!!!

There's a buck in my galery that was chasing a doe up and down a fence line when I "interupted" his proceedings with 150 grains of behaviour modification. He was shot on April 9th. Could the bucks just be pairing up so that they won't have to go too far for their first sh*g of the season later in the year?

i saw another buck chasing a doe the other day. it must be the sun confusing them, they are'nt use to seeing it.

Having witnessed some roe rutting behaviour last summer (end of July) I was some what perplexed to see identical behaviour in May. The buck and doe concerned seemed to be quite mature beasts.

Could it be connected with the shift in daylength in late spring?

Most of the so called rutting activity seen in may is down to the birthing of the fawns this gets the younger bucks excited and they can be seen persuing does as if in season. Were i am i have seen alot of activity of late but none can be discribed as rutting .When that starts were i am cannot be mistaken. PS the bucks seem to be following the does from far at tho minute and this gap will shorten as the weeks go on.

Spot on. This subject comes up every year in May/June, really supprised that most people haven't worked it out yet. JC

Whats known as a false rut and is usually seen were the yearling bucks chase more mature does shortly after dropping kids in May There is no mistaking when the rutts in full swing the mature buck appears to have its nose superglued to the does arse ,when the poor bugger is nackered trying to dip his carrot and stands still exhausted she will keep stopping for him, trying to encourage him to continue, by which time she stands for him, hes absolutely ferked and just about manages to get a stand on , poor sod ,while hes doing all this he is completely in oblivion to surrounding danger ,with the likes of us with rifles ready to dab him and just as hes about to dip the carrot he gets slammed with a 130g bullet poor B******:D

Watch for thundery weather as these conditions will bring the rut on more earlier, anytime I would say from the end of the second week of July and its not an exact science but weather conditions do encourage it

I have a feeling it might be a bit later this year because all the signs of the deers conditions seem to be a few weeks behind normal. But like said when it starts if you have open ground you are in for a real treat i try and get out 4 times a week over that period .Family life takes a back seat just for that couple of week. Got my calls read in antisipation

As Mannlicher Stu said false rut and is common, the true rut normally falls between 20th July and the 8th August another false rut can sometimes be seen towards the end of September.
