Shortening the barrel on a .30-06

I've just managed to get my hands on a split mint Tikka M695 in .30-06, only had 200 rounds through it but it's not threaded. Going to stick a mod on it for obvious reasons, but wondering about having it shortened at the same time. I realise top end performance could be lessened by shortening it, but just fancy it a little less pokey in length. Current factory barrel is 22". How much can I get away with lopping off - 2 or 3" ?

I would leave it.~Muir

Thread it the length it is , and get an over barrel mod

why cut it down 20-23 inch is short enough on any rifle

If you shorten it too much the muzzle blast in the moderator will approach 300 Win Mag levels, not good for the life of the moderator. I would get an over barrel model as advised earlier.
If you retain original length it can also be shot comfortably without the moderator.

Yep, going to leave it the length it is and just have it threaded. Got a second hand Atec maxim coming tomorrow so jobs a carrot. Cheers.
