Gsp?

Hi lads, im thinking of geting a gsp pup in the next couple of weeks. Thing is i need a dog for deer stalking and also need a dog for rough shooting. I havnt trained a dog for any form of shooting before and my question to you is that would it be possible for me to train a gsp for deer and also rough shooting? Unfortunatly i only have space for one dog. Would it be a stupid decission on my part to try train the dog for both or should i just train for just deer?
Thanks.

It's certainly possible. I don't know what level of success can be achieved, but I'm going to have a go at it.

The way my preferences have developed, I think a deer dog is more important than a bird dog to me now.

Ask me in 2-3 years.....

You are best to train your pup to deer first,it will be more steady to all game as a result,as long as you can steady it to deer.Take your time, bond with your pup, start the basics as soon as it gets a bit bolder and start blood trails at about 4 to 6 months, easy ones and don't sicken it,ie one trail a month is plenty.progessively getting it to do harder trails so it has to suss them out a bit.any dog I have had has then went on to roughshooting really easily as a result of training to deer

+1 on that, just remember that G.S.P. are slow to mature so don't try to go to fast to soon I find that G.S.P. are around 18
months before it clicks with them, patience is the name of the game once steady on deer you should have no problem progressing to feathered game.

Stupidly the first time I did it the opposite way got there in the end but took a lot longer.

Now work 3 G.S.P.s so yes you can have a dual purpose dog.

My mate is looking to sell an 18month old GWP, haven't seen the dog but if it would be of any interest to you, pm me and I'll give you his details, his dogs are normally trained to a high standard on both feather and fur.

Bogtrotter spot on.can be very slow to mature as GWP as well, can be hooligans too, firm hand, nae a novice ride but if patient and consistent can have a true jack of all trades, probably the best dual purpose dogs about.cos you haven't trained one before buy Guy Wallaces book, the specialist gundog and the versatile gundog,2very easy to read books.the specialist one has a foreward by one of the greatest.Erlandson

Thanks a lot guys for the advice. I know alot of lads that stalk deer but dont have a deer dog so i couldnt ask any of them for advice. I will purchase them Guy Wallaces books to see what i can learn. Thanks again lads.

I breed and use GSP's for deer and game.
They can do both but you must train to be steady on deer first.
Then and only then introduce game.I have bred Max and Breeze of this site.
Regards john.
