Try Steve Beaty at Ivythorn

I have been looking for a 6.5x55 and he offered me a spanking sako 85 but it was just outside me budget (lot less than list price though)

Prsonally I would go for the 75 every time I have a 243 and a 30.06 and I think they are brilliant, but as stated you will have a job to find a new one, perhaps look for a good secondhand one

I've got one of each. Nothing to choose between them. Don't discount the idea of a second hand one, they are built to last. JC

Only a few chages in asthetics barrel and action are the same,

Errr no the actions are different, the 85 is a sort of control round feed design were the 75 is a straight push feed design. The recoil lug design is better in the 75, and it comes with a stainless steel mag’.

i shot a standard 75 and 85 with the same ammo in 25,06 one day both S/S . i thought the 85 was flipping more and i noticed more recoil .

maybe im talking @hit

This always comes up in 75 vs. 85 debates and (cards on the table I have 2 85's! :D ) I feel I always have to comment. As a engineer by trade I take exception to 'better'. The lug in the 85 is less substantial yes, and most probably cheaper to manufacture admittedly, but no one has been able to satisfy me that it is any worse from the point of view of what it is designed to do, namely stopping the action from busting itself out of the stock!

The lug in the 85 does the same job (I've never heard of a recoil lug in an 85 'fail'!!) as the great lump of steel in the 75 but its a lighter design, therefore to me that is actually an improvement surely?

I have a 6.5 75 and a .300 85, both great guns. the only thing I don't like about my 85 is the lack of a palm swell, although a friend of mine bought a 6.5 85 last year and it did have a palm swell, also the barrel was a little shorter than my 75. Fantastic guns, nothing to chose between them, just personnal preference really.

Thanks guys
It's good to here those with 85's are happy with them. I want this gun to be a keeper, and just had this nagging dout about 85's v 75's based apon just what i have read form others.

I havent discounted second hand it's just hard to find what i want , in a time scale i can live with.
When all i have to do is order what i want now

Thanks for you post's

Joe,

I bought a scope from Steve at Ivythorne and visited his premises. Its a very nice set up. He has a gun room with (when I went) maybe about 40 rifles and shotguns. I think Steve specialises in new stuff and stuff which is in mint / excellent condition. I couldn't tell, when looking at them on the wall, which were new and which were secondhand.

I appreciate that buying a gun secondhand can be a nightmare if you have to either travel to see the gun or get it transfered between RFDs. Different people have different opinions of what "mint" and "excellent" condition means.

However, if you're interested in one of Steve's secondhand guns and went to see it I don't think you'd be dissappointed. From what I saw I'd say he has very high standards for the condition of his secondhand stock. He's also a very knowledable, interesting and engaging chap. If you think a visit might take half an hour, double it and add on an hour.

I have a Sako 85 which I'm very pleased with so far. I've fired John Yorkshire - Roe's 75 at a target and in the field and liked it. I am a novice so am not as practised as others on here but I couldn't tell much of a difference between the 75 and 85. Both feel like very sound, comfortable rifles to me.

Cheers,

Bob

SAKO 75 or 85

I have a Sako 75 in 6.5x55 (not for sale) very accurate!
My friend has the 85 in 6.5x55 i shot this before i found mine, very accurate also!
Both are stainless synthetic,my only thing is, I prefer the stock on mine and think they are slightly better.

I have shot 6.5x55 75 and 85 back to back on the range and both shot sub inch at 100m I prefered the 75, it was wood and the 85 was plastic. just felt better.

Hi ... I have both rifles 75 in 243 and 85 in 308 . Both stainless synthetic. Both shoot sub inch groups. However i will be looking to upgrade the 75 stock as i dont think is up to much... Just personal preference..

I have just bought a Sako 85 varmint (short barrel) and am absolutely delighted with it. Unlike a previous Remington it is ready to use straight out of the box, no need to replace trigger, stock, barrel etc. etc.
I have shot a friend’s model 75 many times in the past and have always been impressed with that also, and quite frankly there is very little difference between them apart from the stock. My friend was unfortunate enough to drop his 75 and the stock snapped at the wrist. He replaced the stock with a McMillan stock and the rifle is even better now, not that there was anything wrong with it before.
One of the features I like about the 75 and 85 is the ability to load the magazine through the top as I am not a great fan of detachable magazines in sporting rifles though I do own several such rifles. I have always found that in the field where you only fire the odd round or two a top loader with open able floor plate is more practical. The 75/85 seems to have the benefit of both magazine and top loader.
I can see my 85 staying with me for a long time, just like my Tikka 595.

Hi,
I got a rifle from Steve, he sent it to my RFD on approval! Perfect gentleman and I would certainly buy from him again.

I don't get why anyone would buy a Remmy, then brand new go and change the trigger, the barrell and the action - I mean, there's only the action left!! buy a remmy action and get it custom built, or even better, buy something that works out of the box! am I crazy or am I missing something here?
