My Sika

Hi Cam
Looks like it may be a wound thats gone bad to me
Do you think it might of been shot before or stabbed ??
Were there any signs of a puncture wound
as it still looks quite pussy and not gone green or hard in anyway
Also was the rest of the carcass in good condition?
what sort of condition was the Sika in before you shot it
ie lively and walking about feeding happily or other

But well done on your first sika :thumb:

View attachment 2598This is what I found when doing my first Sika.

As stated already this may be an infection from a wound. It may also be a staph.aureus infection from some other source, e.g. vectored by deer tick (Ixodes ricinus)

What ante-mortem general health observations did you make?
What sex was this animal? (I know it ought to be male but it need not be. So, please confirm)
What other post-mortem observations did you make? i.e. lymph glands, general condition, weight, ....tick, warble-fly, worm, fluke, infestation etc...
Do you still have the carcass?
Have you submitted any material to the state veterinary service for appraisal or pathogen culture?

Good photo! I wouldn't have thought that it would be an old shot wound as any deer legal calibre would have surely severed the spinal column if hit that close to it. Maybe a .22 rimfire from poachers but anything bigger would have crippled it. Any other signs of entry or exit wounds? If not, then it is probably just a cyst.
If the rest of the animal is fine it should be good for dogfood if nothing else.
