Gwp lines for working?

I'm looking for a gwp puppy, mainly for deer and fox work. But as a keeper some bird work too. A few shoot days a little dogging in and the occasional day duck shooting in Norfolk.

My question is which gwp lines are suitable for this work?

Opinions on trudvang, kimmax, bryantscroft please

Dennis Groom on this site still has pups. They are worth a look as I am sure some on here who have picked a pup already will testify to.

I think Thar of the site has a litter at the moment, they are Trudvang/Bryantscroft, probably the best lines in the country.

thanks for the replies, i'll hopefully be speaking to thar today,

I was really looking for comments on what each of the lines are like?

which work what game best etc? are kimmax gwp as biddable that sort of thing.

I can see kimmax win alot of trials but do they do much work?

any info on the different merits of the lines would be much appreciated

Working GWP

I cant recommend the Trudvang kennel enough, i have a young dog from there and his WORKING lines are terrific, have a look at the different websites if they have photos standing showing off the dog , holding its tail and head in a pose in my opinion give it a miss.

i have seen trudvang dogs work at field trials they are very good ,have you seen the pups in the adds page.
i have h.w.v so not biased.

Can't comment on kimax as I've not seen them. I do know he imported a couple of dogs from Germany to improve his line but he also shows them as do the Pinkertons (bareve).

My wire is from Bryantscroft and has great drive but at the same
time is very bidable and wants to please. The sire to my dog is from Trudvang and again Chris has dogs to work not show!

Hope this helps?

I know a few folk with Trudvang dogs, and the Wildman himself, excellent temprament and solid working dogs. (next best to a Weimaraner ;))

Its an interesting idea Dickyboy and you may be lucky however it won't be easy at all, I have had a go at most things with my GWP she has been foxing since pretty young just following up any that have been hard to find. We've done dogging in this season and she has been in the beating line all year and its been a good year, you will have a few issues you don't get with the more traditional dogs. Pointing is the obvious one they are a little hit and miss with flushing birds and a bit depends how keen to flush the birds are. If they sit tight you end up flushing most yourself, the bonus is they hunt far steadier than a springer for example so in the line mine just stops if you get a flush going, If you get one sitting tight she does wait to be told to flush it. Retrieving with mine is a little hit and miss fine on foxes etc pheasants she will retrieve the odd one but not interested in doing one after the other as it bores her. Deer we're just starting on and looking good so far they are very versatile and cracking characters but you'll find strengths and weaknesses. One things for sure they will outwork any other dog on most shooting fields but easy they aren't

kimmax lines are all german, you wont find better than trudvang or bryanscroft imho.why not get a good looking dog tho, longhaired pointer all the way:D:stir:

You have some nice looking dogs longhair! I remember Rory had one a few years ago. Rob Gould has a good success rate with them, not sure I could handle the general public asking about my leggy spaniel though!:stir::stir:

I use mine for deer, picking-up, rough shooting & beating. Excels at deer, good at rough shooting, beating and picking-up. I put a lot of work into him, more so than with my Labs and for picking -up he is not as good or as stylish. For example he is less profficiant at directions, going back etc. But where he does excel is his drive and determination on runners. He also does not tire! I expect him to get better as he is only two now!

iv had them all,red setter flatcoat retreiver even cocker spaniel when it was younger:cuckoo: biggest bloody cocker iv ever seen.my bitch has the same lines as robs on the sires side.this is my first glp but i love them i use her for everything deer pigeon wildfowling picking up.il try and get some pics up of her from scotland trip in january

I have one of Dennis's GWP pups, she is coming on a treat, bursting full of energy and personality. Other than basic manners I havn't started any serious training yet as I don't want to rush her. She is a smashing wee bitch though and i'm very happy with her.

Hello If its any help we hold a lot of HPR trials here and so I have a lot of contacts in that line. Now I am not sure but one of the bitches that came here at the end of the season was due to be mated and I am sure it is a open stake bitch. If you send me a PM I will give you some contact details.

Regards

Mark

Glad to hear it!

If she turns out half as nice as her mother she will still be a looker!

ive, had the gwp since 83, and would recomend a few kennels, WIGGMANSBURG,from where i got my first wire, BAREVE, KIMMAX,whose whose dogs have proved themselves over and over, indeed Kimmax compete in VDD, in the breeds homeland, TRUDVANG,BRYANSCROFT, whom work mainly, the others enjoying the showring recognising the importance of correct conformation, coat, temperament, size etc, the gwp is a specialist breed with specific attributes, which the owner must understand to get the best , from their dog, also any breeder whom cares for this breed will have all recognised KC health test done,ie HDD, Vvb,epilepsey, eyes too ensure health of all breeding stock, THE late MAJOR wILKINSON,with others had the the foresight,to form the GWP CLUB, in 70s ,WHEN BREED was in its infancy, small gene pool, temperament problems, etc now thanks too dedication, of its members ,imports, this fine breed has gone from strengh too stength, hence trying too fine fault, with breed enthuists and kennels that show and WORK? is a total lack of understanding and ignorant too say least, this could lead too a split in breed, and the slipery slope, for the breeds sake we cant allow this too happen, any pup given correct enviorment, socialisation, diet, training, will work some better than others ,its easiest thing world too criticise,if its not CONSTRUCTIVE,why bother, get a lab and leave the breed in the hands of people that care, because there is only one breed standard pertaining too ALL,
