Recently i bought a scope from Scopes4U in the states. It was sent and arrived within 4 days by Fedex. No demand for customs or whatever.
My missus now tells me i have a lettter at home from Fedex uk wanting an amount that seems more that UK Vat and similar company handling charge. I already paid 66 dollars for the US to UK postage.
Until i get home it will go on hold so i can find out what charges are what.
I agree with hogey that the cost he is showing is normal US suppliers but its what comes after.
Just looking for a nice second hand example chaps, not wanting to import. Last one I got was £550 so this is the area of price I am looking at.
If you look at Cabelas nowadays they impose very strict guidleines on what they will export.
They are currently pricing the Forster Co-Ax reloading press at 259US what a pity they wont send them here.
Just cannot understand why there is a market for a British Company to satisfy some of our shooting supply needs.
We usd to work on a 30% margin which at the end of the year would give us about 20-22%.
That may sound a good return but it is not when you way up the hours worked and the investment.
They work on much smaller margins in the US and if the exchange rate was right I could buy goods from the US cheaper than I could buy them from my UK supplier and sell them on cheaper than my competitors.
I do not think the dealers in the UK make a fortune on what they sell but they have to make a living
i have also run sveral business ventures with varying profit levels, i dont disagree that profits must be viable. What i meant is its a pity that there are no British manufacturers for a lot of the products we use.
I am more than aware of the volume/price argument that makes US markets attractive but we have gone from a reasonably healthy gun trade to almost no maufacturers except specialists and very high end market.
I really was not complaining i just thought there mut be some opportunities for some more home grown products
