BASC calls for pilot deer stalking scheme in Northern Ireland

Three forest service wildlife rangers manage deer populations across 61,000 hectares of woodland in Northern Ireland. BASC believes that their work would be greatly aided by the involvement of the province’s recreational deer stalkers. BASC is calling on its members in Northern Ireland to lobby political representatives in a bid to secure a pilot deer stalking scheme.

Seems logical, if such a scheme is adopted it will provide a new stream of revenue for the NI forest service and will provide opportunity for NI stalkers where little currently exists.

The problem with NI is that farm and forestry holdings are small compared to those in GB and there are relatively few areas remote from habitation, hence there are both safety issues and also issues of disturbance of the deer from household / farming activity, meaning that NI stalking is very limited.

There are limited deer numbers in the province, although muntjac appear to have been smuggled in and are turning up both in NI and the republic. I haven't heard of roe sightings in NI there but it is only a matter of time given the sudden appearance of muntjac.
