powder for .308

If its a toss up between varget and N140/50 then I would go for varget. Its very consistent. Smooth metering. And less affected by temperature when out on the ground. (less important if you are a fair weather shooter!)

Norman Clark gets 8lb tubs of Varget in every so often and last time I looked it was under £30 per lb.
If you can find a supplier of the bulk powders Vhit gets close to £30 as well.

N140 in the .308 for me with excellant results. Using HPS target rifles it works out to £53 per kilo if you buy the 3.5Kg tub, you'll need to meet them at a trade fair like at Bisley to avoid postage. Use it all, split it with a mate, whatever. I understand the 'hold' allowance has now increased to 15Kg of powder anyway.

IMR4895 preferentially and Varget as alternative.
The IMR4895 also runs my 22-250 and 7mm-08 underated powder but I love it.

Depends too on barrel length. I run a 18.5" barrel and find ADI AR2206H or Hodgson 335 burns faster than varget [ADI AR 2208] and is therefore more suited to short barrels. You are able to recoup some lost fps thatway.

TR140 or Vit N140, gives excellent results in my Steyr SSG-04, much cheaper and kicks less than Varget! :)
