i was in cambridge at the weekend working the dog and seen our first brood of mallard,must have been 3-4 days old.these must have been laid end of feb! global warming,were all dooooooomed
 
Sorry but this is not unusual at all. Mallard start laying from the end of Feb as standard providing it's not terrible weather obviously!
 
I've got several hen Mallard on nests at the moment in my laying pen, due off any day now. I've had them hatching out as late as 5th October also.
 
I remember going wildfowling at the end of jan many years ago, while driving out of the village early in the morning had to give way to a mother duck and her brood crossing the road, ok these were semi tame local village pond ducks but still early all the same.

didnt think end of feb was standard.got plenty of pairs up here but none with chicks yet.maybe earlier further south
