The last couple of stalking trips north of the border I've been hassling our resident fabrication wizard (aka Mereside) to build me a gun safe to fit an alcove in my house. I'm fed up with trying to fit rifles into too small a safe, scratching stocks and scopes and getting slings caught in the door, plus I have a few new toys on the way in need of a home. Wayne had built his own safe to the approved standard and quoted me the same price for a 16+ gun safe as I was looking at paying for a new 7 gun safe locally.
After sending the dimensions to Wayne, followed by a quick call back from him to check I hadn't accidentally sent him the measurements for my bedroom wardrobe, and a brief chat about paint finish, shelves, locks etc, the deal was done and I concentrated on filling in another 101 form to make sure I had enough new guns to fill the space nicely...
The new safe has now arrived, delivered by Wayne en route to an appointment last weekend in Northampton, and it's a beauty! 700mm wide by 500mm deep and 1600mm tall, with a nice glossy black powdercoat finish inside and out, it has enough space for 10+ rifles and 6 shotguns, along with two massive rubber lined shelves for ammunition, moderators and any other things that need to be locked away from my wife. It also has two shelves in the door for magazines, thread protectors, scope covers etc. After bolting it in with 12 x 100mm Thunderbolts, I have lined the interior with 5mm acoustic felt and fitted a 30W striplight. The safe is built to the current British Standard to meet police approval, with the appropriate locks, wall thickness, weld standards and anti-jemmying protection.
All for a couple of pints over £300.
If you are after a new safe and want something larger or more specialised than the standard offerings, speak to Wayne first.
