How strange, never seen anything like that before!
Hope you kept it! New one on me, morena may have the answer!
Did you cut into it? First guess would be an accessory digit, although I can't explain the different colour
I haven't tried cutting in to it, and it's now bagged up for the bin with the other "extras". Is an accessory digit a bit like Anne Boleyn's sixth finger?
All deer have metacarpals ( metapodials ) 3 and 4 fused ( Equivalent to the bones in your hand which are separate ) in addition have lost metacarpal 1 ( thumb ) Muntjac are classified as plesiometacarpal deer. What this means is the metacarpal bones 2 and 5 normally connecting the carpus ( knee in animals, wrist in humans ) to the foot are in the process of disappearing from the foot end. Hence this appendage is a vestigial metacarpal. Could be either cartilage or bone or a mixture of both. Unusual but not normally so prominent.
Very interesting, morena. Many thanks.
Interesting photo. Never seen anything like that before.
