I don't have the full low down, but many members of a local club shoot long barreled pistols and revolvers and you are correct - only they or FAC holders with a variation for that firearm can shoot them, no-one else.

That's correct, they fall outside the exemptions that allow club members to shoot club firearms and other members firearms. Similar legislation applies to section 1 shotguns. Therefore a club cannot have either long barrelled pistols or section 1 shotguns on it's club certificate.
There was some sort of test case fairly recently which the shooters rights association was involved with and as a result there may just be some changes made to the legislation at some time in the future but don't hold your breath.
