Sorry if I missed it but just out of curiosity... which cartridge did you actually choose in the end, for your "semi-custom" stalking rifle build?

It depends when in the '30s it was 'invented'.
I think 1935 or later, the flag is correct.

Extra: 'Cartridges of the World' Barnes 10th ed. gives development 1938-9 and marketing 1940: so it seems bang on!

I concur... 1933-45 it was the flag of the Third Reich and Nazi Germany. Possibly not very PC to show it off now though and have you ever noticed how few published photos there are of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, in which that flag is visible? ... You will now :D

indeed, my pc is full of well hidden gun-porn. LOL

Tamus - in the end I settled on a battery consisting of: .22LR, .223, .243. 30-06 as my main hunting rifles. The .243 if it ever gets worn out will be rebarrelled to 6.5 HCM simply because I'll be using the .223 for roe and the 30-06 is a bit heavy and cumbersome for sika, hence a middle-ground on a short action would be useful, but that may be a number of years given the current degree (or lack of) barrel wear in the .243.

I find it quite amusing that the Third Reich flag is verbooten yet the USSR communist flag is ok yet Hitler was a rank amarteur at genocide compared to Stalin and Mao and of course the Chinese flag is wonderful .

Actually if you look at those responsible for genocide the left wing communists are way out in first place and they are still at it today.

Aww! ... I really thought you might give the "Bob" a go.:D

It's interesting to note your choices are very like my son's and mine. We've got .22lr, .22hornet (1968 factory/original spec with 6x42 scope on top... handy thing... to 150 yds), .223rem (heavy, long, 1:8 twist border barreled with bi-pod, big scope and moderator... massive thing... to 300yds and plus) and the two stalking rifles a 6.5-284 and a 30-06.

We can go out as pair on almost any quarry and have almost equally well suited kit.

I even used to have a .243win, back in the days before I took up reloading. In fact, it was the first centrefire I owned but the factory ammo gave me some bad experiences... along with many good ones it has to be said. So, I tend to have a bit of an aversion to .243win, which is probably unfair.

I genuinely love my .243, but perhaps it's becuase I love my sako 75... I find reloading easy and like the fact that I can drop down to 55/60g for fox or up to 100g for reds,,IF I want, but stick at the 85/87g range for 99% of the roe stalking. it's very versatile. it's one of those jack of all trades master of none rifles, much like the bob - and to be honest, I would seriously consider the 257R as well when the time comes. I do have a mauser long action that needs a re-build, I'm not certain if a LA lends itself well to a 257 or if a SA is more suitable, but given the 56.7mm case length I suspect a LA is the best, in which case it may just get built one day when FLO and money allows.
