Tamus - in the end I settled on a battery consisting of: .22LR, .223, .243. 30-06 as my main hunting rifles. The .243 if it ever gets worn out will be rebarrelled to 6.5 HCM simply because I'll be using the .223 for roe and the 30-06 is a bit heavy and cumbersome for sika, hence a middle-ground on a short action would be useful, but that may be a number of years given the current degree (or lack of) barrel wear in the .243.
