It does bug me about the UK that the police catch someone, spend time gathering the evidence, support the victim, take flack off the media all for the judge/magistrate to give them the minimum sentance and then let them out after only a 1/3 served as they have been good/run out of room/shown remorse...(insert whatever nonsense you like here). Sentences should be consecutive NOT concurrent and actually serve what they are given!
There's a problem with this. AIUI, the fiscal/CPS will prosecute an individual on a number of charges so that even if (s)he gets off some of them on appeal through a procedural failure or technicality they will still stand convicted of at least something. But if they are found guilty on all of them, and the sheriff hands down for example 6 one year sentences to be served consecutively, the sheriff has exceeded his sentencing powers in terms of length of imprisonment. (Happy to be corrected by anyone with better knowledge)
