Have you read the fascinating work undertaken by Karis Baker’s for her PhD “Population genetic history of the British roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and its implications for diversity and fitness”. The work has been published by the BDS amongst others.
In this work she established that the Thetford roe deer are genetically separated from other UK roe deer populations, this is not surprising as it is widely reported that these deer originate from a release of 12 German animals imported from Württemberg. To date the Germanic linkage isn’t proven, can any member help source some tissue samples from Württemberg area, sample bottles and instructions can be provided.
Karis is currently working on the “Dama International: Fallow Deer and European Society” project, whose Principal Investigator Dr Naomi Sykes. While the project is focussed on the Fallow deer, tissues samples from French Roe deer are also required, if you can source some please pm me.
