Took a lad of the forum out this evening hopefully for his first deer. He is no stranger to rifles and does a bit of paper punching. Met up at 16.30 and must admit my heart sank slightly when he said that he had just put a scope on his rifle, had bore sighted it but just had not had the opportunity to have a go at a target. Luckily I had a target in the vehicle and after a quick thought about where he could check zero we were back on plan. A couple of slight adjustments were needed and we were good to go. Stood talking for a couple of minutes and suddenly two does and a buck appeared but a bit further out than the target. Unbelieveable, the buck even stood to present an excellent shot. Knowing the background of his experience on paper he got the nod. Well struck but it took off back into the wood behind it. Gave it a bit of time and then the dog was onto it. An easy 100 or so yard track through the trees and a first deer was in the bag. Not a great head but in hard antler and on the hook at 17.5kg. Result.
Had a stalk about for a second but could only come up with does.
The pheasant syndicate on this ground use gas guns at different points in an attempt to scare wandering birds back onto the shoot. Obviously the resident roe have become accustomed to the noise and had no fear of the few shots fired at the target.
A good evening Bruce, your very welcome and I hope it's the first of many.
