Deceiving children

My younger son is 14 and autistic so to him most things are black & white with very little movement when his minds made up. He only likes shooting duck as that's the only game he likes or will eat(or so he thinks).
he came to mine on Friday announcing he was hungry so I offered to cook a roe fillet fo him but he refused firmly and no one could persuade him otherwise, he wanted chicken fajitas. I explained I didn't have any chicken but had steak so this was acceptable, I proceeded cooked the food which was met by rave reviews by my son & the Mrs. After that I explained that it was steak but venison steak expecting some upset from my son instead it was the Mrs who kicked off claiming it was a waste of fillet, lol my son said nothing but didn't seem phased untill yesterday & today when I had to cook more for him at request,ha ha ha.
WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW EH!

About right mate!

Was round the mother in laws, BBQ was going, all the usual clobber being thrown onto it.

Had a batch of venison burgers to cook up, normal run'o the mill crap just doesn't taste nice when you're used to venison!

My two nieces were tucking right into their burgers, and i mean they weren't touching the sides, till the stupid mother in law asks: "Are these the deer burgers Nick?" I shot her a filthy look, but as expected, both girls suddenly didn't want to eat their burgers!

Big Steve at the pub turned a red spiker I'd shot into something daft like 100 burgers for gala day bbq and on the evening they sold out rapid!! This was brilliant but nobody actually cared because they were too pis5ed and starving to care

I felt bad for steve because he put mega effort into making a few kinds like chilli and stuff to get people to go wow and in the end they just stood about grunting, oh well....

ECCLEFECHAN!!! Where VD is mistaken for that blue bottle in the bar fridge...

I work with children daily, and we explain that all the lambs, calves and piglets end up in the shop as meat, when I started here it was the staff, who said we would lose visitors, they have been proved wrong, and the biggest surprise to them is that the kids have no problem with it, any complaints come from 16+, and adults, but out of 120,000+ visitors we only get a handful a year. We also sell venison with no complaints.

It's not just kids that fall for it. The wife wouldn't even contemplate eating pigeon until I minced some up and made bolognaise out of it. "That was gorgeous" she said. I thought she was going to swing for me when I said "see? you do like pigeon after all".

My mate has a mother in law who is pretty much anti everything especially shooting and never misses a chance to go on and on... but my mate takes great pleasure serving up 'organic beef' which she enjoys so much she now asks for it when she visits.

Needless to say it is not 'organic beef' but another equally tasty animal ( deer in case you hadn't guessed ) going to show what they don't know won't hurt 'em !!!!

We have a family favourite I cook called "Marauders Pie", basically whatever we have in the fridge or freezer that was caught marauding over Granddad's farm. Several years ago now my eldest boy had a friend over when we were having it, he loved it. Next time the boy was due to stay he actually requested it.
A while later outside the school gate his mum came over with a couple of others to ask me for the recipe as he wanted her to make it at home. It is very much a changeable list of ingredients, when I got to the list of potential meats only his mum was still with the idea, the other mums were horrified I'd feed wild animals and birds to children, how could I possibly know the meat was safe to eat if not "properly done by a shop" ?! (At that point I'd been a Butcher for over 20 years:rolleyes:)
That particular friend still visits often and regularly takes bits and bobs home from our fridge or freezer.

The previous butchers I worked in was keen on selling game and in season and had a 'game ring' hanging in the shop with braces of rabbit, hare, pheasant, partridge, mallard etc. hanging from it. It was a fantastic talking point and the number of children who were fascinated and wanting to know what everything was was a great opportunity to talk with the parents as well. If they were really interested I'd take off a couple of pheasant fillets and tell the youngster a really simple way to cook and serve them. Then challenge them to do it as meal for mum or dad and come back in and tell me what they thought of such 'posh food'.
It was generally the parents who took the convincing, but once their little sweet heart or pride and joy had gone to such effort .....:)

ha ha sounds like your all as bad as me at dinner parties i alway introduce people to new foods, last one was deep fried squirrel in tempura batter with a sweet chillie dip, just cant get enough squirrel now to keep everyone happy, atb wayne

Did something similar on Boxing Day, I had a red hind fillet to make venison wellington, next i hear swmbo's friend and teenage daughter are coming up from Lincoln and staying for a meal. Well i can stretch it to four, but I'll be damned if I'm going to see it wasted, so told them it was beef wellington. Once they were both commenting on how tender and delicious it was, then swmbo told them. Oh, (pregnant pause) well its lovely and continued eating. Sure enough the conversation turned to ethics and it gave a great opportunity to educate as to the need for deer management.

This is spot on.
It's always adults that have issues with these things. Kids are usually delighted to know exactly what animal they're eating.
And if you challenge adults about why they're being so daft about it, they usually shuffle about a bit and make an excuse like "not wanting to upset the children". Bahhhh!
Sometime around about puberty kids seem to be indoctrinated with the twisted opinions of an overly PC sector of our population. Infuriating.

Why did the wife think it a waste of fillet !!?!?!

i have autistic children too
too and if my wife kicked off after being Able to successfully feed autistic kids successfully with quality grub and they like it .... I would have told get to wind her f'in neck in!!!!

cant see why special needs kid eating good protein and liking it is in any way other than total success and as for asking for it again ?.......

well hats off to the chef well done

sauer i dont think he ment it was a waste to feed his kids just it was a waste going into a fajita rather than a nice fillet ,or at least thats the way i read it ,atb wayne

half the "mince" my kids eat is from non-specific donors!

don't have the balls to feed my wife something "specialist" without telling her! She would have mine!

did make some "Tandoori nuggets" for a party once.
Rabbit and Pheasant.

they disappeared in about 3 mins flat
No-one believed me when I told them what they had actually had!

I do like the Marauder Pie though! stealing that

[Calm down m8 it was a humourous comment she just thought that using best roe fillet in fajitas was a bit rich when other cuts would do the same in those meals, nothing sinister in it just a joke.
the Mrs ain't like that if she was shed be down the road had 2 like that & never again.

Yeah now I read my post that's how it looks I read it

Ito wasn't assuming waste due to the child either ... No way !!
so if it comes across as that I apologise

i knew it was due to fajitas etc

Just the fact that special needs kids of mine 3 & 4 yrs

Its not like normal kids where you can leave their plate and say well that or go hungry ....
Trust me I'm old school brought up but that doesn't work with autistic kids !!!
mine living on child one- dry Jacobs crackers & innocent smoothies
Child2 - Nutella chocolate spread on whole meal bread !!!!
dietician says they are growing as per expectations ... Leave it they will grow out of it !!

Now if can just get him to do it again!!

Apologises again if post was taken wrong way wasn't meant

No problem m8 I do know how stressful it is from being a single parent for 16 years oldest in collage now but it's never easy and the youngest being autistic is a real challenge even for me at times made worse by the fact he's realy intelligent in some areas years ahead in some ways but not in others it's a real head spinner at times but believe me by the time yours get to the age of mine you'll have it sorted and down to a fine art. all you'll have to worry about then is other people or do good social workers with their new ideas they want to try, it'll drive you mad! But believe me you'll cope easily because you have to and it will all be so rewarding nothing else will come close, ( ok maybe a big Mongolian moral stag or ibex).

Mine eat "lean" leg of lamb with no complaints, son no 3 was over the moon this weekend to have roast pheasant just to himself. Many years ago I did pigeon kebabs for a BBQ and they all go scoffed in double quick time all commented on how nice they were and most of guests were not at all worried when they were told they were pigeon. My pareents were quite anti venison as dad in particular said it was too gamey. However they thought a leg of Muntie was very nice, but I don't hang anything. Mum is now quite happy to do stuffed breast of Roe, good for them being so lean.

Introduced Biltongue as African Chocolate to my daughter when she was three. Now when I shoot a roe buck we turn it into biltongue and between the two of us we can eat our way through most of roe bucks worth of biltongue in a week!

How do you dry it up there in Scotland it's almost as wet as inWales  No seriously I used the airing cupboard for it once and got in lots of trouble so cold smoke it now when I'm doing salmon & it seems ok
