Zeiss Duralyt 3-12x50 IR - for a rimfire..?

Am about to buy a Zeiss Duralyt 3-12x50 IR to put on my Anschutz .17hmr. Is this overkill..? It is a big investment for a rimfire, but they are such great scopes. IR because I do a lot of rabbit lamping at night. Am struggling to find anything that comes close to the Duralyt at lower cost. Wondering whether others on here have indulged themsleves when buying scopes for their rimfires..? Steve

Does it have parralex adjustment? If not and its factory set "Parallax free @ 100m" you may be disapointed (at 12 Power) when taking closer shots.

I have one on my Savage .17hmr. Have to live with the sub 100m out of focus issue but other than that it's great.

Klenchblaize - good point about parallex adjustment. Duralyt is fixed parallex at 100m. Presumably this is also issue if wishing to fit a nightvision adapter where parallex adjustment is needed for focus....
Will have to restrict my NV adapter for my airgun (Rapid 7 FAC), the gun I use it most on anyway.

Yes, and I hadn’t even thought about the NV side of things!

This is exactly my predicament in that I would love a nice piece of glass on my 22LR that can be used for both squirrel bashing (at what is often air rifle ranges) and BSRC competition at 50 yards where cranking up to a minimum of 18+ power is most desirable.

Short of spending circa £3K on the S&B that ticks all the boxes other than size I can only think of a the Leupold I currently have a “Wanted” add in the SD for.

Strikes me both Zeiss and Swarovski are missing a trick here as even those with side parallax don’t do sub 50 yards very well at high mag.

Cheers

So adjust the parallax, or chicken out and sent it to Zeiss as I'm sure they will do it for you.
The diy options is quicker though, and so far has worked on every scope I have tried it on except a couple
of cheap Nikons, well it works but you can't lock the front ring back down and the objective is bonded to the outer ring.

Ha d the same problem when after some quality glass for my 22lr. Looked at the duralyt, s&b 8x56 and meopta meopro 4-12x50 and they are all paralax free @ 100 yards so may be useable on a on 17 but if shooting at 15-20 yards the picture would be blurry. I have a burris fullfield 4.5-14x44 with pa and even that isnt ideal as the pa only goes down to 50 yards,. I was thinking about trading it against a bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42/50. Other than that it would be a kinda specialised leup or nikon efr model. Most other quality scopes seem to be pa free at 100 or if adjustable they only come down to 50 yards. Hawke sidewinders etc come down to 10 yards with pa but not sure how good the quality of these are - defo no where near the quality of any of the afore mentioned scopes.

3x12x50 s&b FD 7 Zenith on my .22 LR it really is spot on, the illuminated reticule is a great advantage and the glass is excellent.

perfect for short and longer range shots

Or just shoot closer on lower mag?

So far we have:-

a. Put up with out of focus issue.
b. DIY objective lens *adjustment that will void warrenty. (*Note: Swarovski WON'T do this at the factory as a one off. I have the e-mail.)
c. Reduce mag at close range.

Must I also put up with 3" groups from a £6K rifle??

Cheers

Interesting. Have also looked at Hawke and the Bushnell 6500 for my arnie .17. Have had Hawke before for airgun shooting - good at that price bracket, dedicated ballistics software etc, but no match for Zeiss and others on quality. Can afford to spend a bit more on a scope, but am disappointed that there are so few options that combine quality optics, IR, and parallex adjustment.

My current scope is a Leopold European, 4-12 x 40, on a 30mm tube. It has a fine duplex reticle, great for day shooting, but can be hard to pick out the cross hairs when lamping at night.

Maybe making too much of the parallax adjustment thing? Desirable, but not necessary. Most of my shooting is probably 75yds+.

i have a 6x42 zeiss diatal on a 22lr. i find its a great combination, plus the sight picture stays constant.

Very nice - different league again. Any problems with the fixed parallax..?.
non at all but i usually use it at around x8 power. They all have fast focus on the eye piece anyway and paralax is usually only a problem above x16.
i have 2x .....6-24x56 victory fls and they have side paralax. I set it at 150m and its no issue any distance unless they are over x14.

What difference does the fast focus make to parallax, the focus is set the reticle focus to your eye, not the target.
As for no error until 16x, well a 7x50 Meopta on a .22 shoots horrible 25 yard groups, until you adjust the parallax.
I have found though that the biggest issue is not the magnification but objective size, as i said the 7x50 was terrible
but my 3-9x36 Swaro is fine at 25 yards when shooting at 6x, and a 50 yard target is fine at 9x

So when will one or more of the top 3 manufactures produce a 4 – 16X50RF (Rimfire) Model with illumination and side parallax down to 15M??

It can be done - S&B do a Field Target air rifle model that will focus rite down to 8 yards on full mag but at 2k and 12-60 mag range it mite be a bite overkill for a rimmy. However a 3-12 or 4-16 would be most welcome. The best i could find along these lines was the leupold 3-9x33 efr but as said above it would be nice to have a rimfire option from one of the top 3.

Spot on and good to know at least 1 SD member is on-side with this one.

I thought the S&B FT was closer to £3K than 2?

Bit of a lump on a classic rimfire though.

Yeah you could b quite right K it's been 5-6 years since I shot ft and when the s&b ft came out it was £2,200 so I dare say it could b up around the 3k mark by now. Way to big for a nice rimmy I recon with the sunshade on it probably won't b far off the length of my wee cz!! I contacted Swarovski regarding a z3 being re paralaxed at the factory and they said they wouldn't do it and also the warranty would b void if I touched it myself.
