For an off the shelf rifle, my sentimental favourite is a pre 64 Win mod 70 in 30 06. My current choice, if buying something new off the shelf to be a dedicated deer rifle would be the new stainless version, in 30 06 also. It pains me to put down the original but I believe the current version is the best mod 70 ever made.
Other than the Win any Mauser 98 clone that functions, be it a parker hale, zastifa ,brno, cz, ruger, etc.
I do have doubles but they're just an indulgence, rather than tools.
