Chest Saw

The point with 'specialist' chestbone saws is that they cut on the outstroke, meaning that debris from the cut is brought out of the cavity, not pushed in - so more hygienic etc. The one you specify cuts on both strokes so would push debris into the carcass.
Bushwear's own brand saw is perfectly adequate and good value - http://www.bushwear.co.uk/nostyles.php?ProductID=316913&ClassID=206

But the Bushwear one cuts both ways: "The teeth cut on both the push and pull stroke and make short work of the rib cage and pelvic bone."

I have always been intrigued as to why people cut pelvis and chest in the field.
Really can't see how this makes sense regardless of any nanny "best practice"

my field gralloch holes are as small as possible

ie. Vmax, then just let the organs pour out by tilting the beast downhill:popcorn:

just get one of those folding pruning saws a friend of mine uses one and with a couple of pulls ive watched him go through a fallow with ease and there cheap as chips

Helps cool it down quicker.

I only needed to see Chris Howard deploy the D Stratton Breast Bone saw once to realise this was the real deal. Cuts on the pull stroke as mentioned elsewhere and zips through a roe in as few as two passes if you're a bit of gorilla. I had DS make one with a yellow handle to match my tripe knife.

Get one and never look back.

I currently use the older bushware saw. It only cuts on the pull stroke. I used to have a David Stretton knife and it was excellent. I leant it to someone and I didn't get it back! The trick with it is let the saw do the work!

I just use my graloching knife. So long as the animals not ancient and your knifes sharp, it saves carring yet another item.

Hmmmm, that'll explain quite a lot - love to see you do even a reasonable Fallow without killing that blade any further......!!

I'm with Bewsh on the fewer cuts the better for reduced contamination risk - and grateful to Deerman for stopping me from going mad as my Bushwear saw definitely only cuts on the upstroke.

I use the Sagen Bone saw for the pelvis. I do cut the pelvis as you can just turn out everything then. The preliminary cuts to the pelvic bone with your knife are important. I have hunted with people that ruin a good bit of the haunch on their way to that saw cut. The one shown in the Ebay link above is intended for moose, elk, or larger game. They make an orange handled model that has a shorter blade. Much better.

I do not use this saw for the rib cage. I simply cut along the edge of the sternum with my knife. I can cut the chest open with little effort. I am surprised anyone would consider using a saw.~Muir

this drives me nuts!
and all in the interest of the game dealer and contamination!
he won't be best pleased when he has to trim 1/2" of contaminated muscle fibre ends and tidy up a screwed up haunch split!

that said I prefer the haunch not to be flapping around against a sawn pubic bone before the hanging/butchering, especially when dragging

you can take the whole lot out the ass anyway, especially stags/bucks
