Change of rifle - Left Hand

I am looking to replace my current 30-06 rifle with a new one. It is a Browning A Bolt stalker in stainless steel and it has given sterling service over a number of years but it is getting time to change. At the time of purchase it was one of the few rifles that was available in left hand and that was within my price range. I have looked at the usual suspects and one of the problems seems to be the waiting time for delivery. If anyone has any information or personal knowledge of any LH rifles in 30-06 I would be grateful to hear from you, especially if you have bought one recently.

Regards

The hunt for left handed rifles is a frustrating one. The Sauer on Guntrader is a beautiful thing and will serve you well - and a not dissimilar price to a new Tikka or whatever. Have you thought about rebarrelling/semi-customing what you have?

You're dead right about the frustration. I did think about having some work done to the Browning but I went down that route with a Remy a few years ago and after I got the rifle back and the bill I wished I hadn't bothered. I'll have a look on Guntrader. Thanks

i had exactly the same problem , but ive sorted it now , i sourced a sako 691 in 270 at holts for £300 and its being sent to jagerSA on here to be re-barreled , all in all im getting a semi custom rifle for the price of a factory rifle in left handed or there abouts .

mind you took me a long time to find the right action at the right price !

Left hand Rifle frustration............I've had a lifetime of it !
Eventually went for a R93 all left handed. OK, it cost a "pretty penney" but its worth it...to me anyway !

John.

There is someone on here who specialises in lh rifles or at least always has a few but can't remember who it is for the life of me. Anyway I have 2 Tika's in LH and neither of them your size but me love them big time.

There is a specialist in LH rifles in Halesowen, Suffolk - Mark Ingate - who deals in rather fancy re-barrelled stock, but only advertises these occasionally. I do browse through his offerings in Gunmart & GT when they pop up, but nothing has ever appealed to date. He may have something to suit you which he's not currently advertising:confused:

I've always fancied a Lefthand .30-06 but have had to admit defeat on both occasions & settle for a .308. I've never seen a secondhand standard LH sporting rifle in .30-06 from a European maker for sale in the UK.

I don't like U.S. makes like Savage or Remington, and just can't see the point of takedown rifles like the Blazer or Sauer range. When Gunmark took over the Beretta agency from JLS, and were selling the Tikka M595/M695 range (just before the T3 took over) they had only sold 4 lefthand in .30-06 at the time I enquired.

Going by the numbers sold, the .30-06 isn't a popular stalking calibre in the UK - even in righthand form. While a few select it from choice for many it seems to be an 'opportunity calibre' which people spot on the shelf at a good price so switch their Variation for. Hate to say it, but the prospects don't look good unless you buy new at well over a grand.

I think you're right in terms of its popularity in the UK. A lot of people tend to think it is like the .308 but with a little extra oomph. What I like about the calibre is its sheer versatility as regards the bullet weight. I have used this calibre for shooting fox through to bear using suitable ammunition. Having said that it is what it is and it is never going to overtake the .308 in the affections of british shooters..

I appreciate the info I will have a look on guntrader and see if I can locate his details.

I've recently bought a Sauer in 7x64 in left handed. Very nice accurate rifle but to be honest I am struggling with the safety catch. It just doesn't feel right. Heym do left handers in their SR 21 bolt action and SR 30 straight pull. Both lovely rifles and only a few quid more than a Sako. I am considering swapping in my Sauer for one. They are available in 30-06. Ring Garlands for your local dealer. Click on this http://www.arcinter.com/en/hunting/fire_arms/heym-gun/index.html then click on catalogue.
There is several videos on youtube as well here's one

This route makes a lot of sense as they are very good actions, I bought an old AV (L61R Finnbear) from Briarquest recently and it will shoot 4 rounds covered by a penny at 100 yards with factory ammo - I think there's an L61R left hand in .270 coming up in December at Holts which would form the basis of a superb semi-custom - alternatively you could keep it as is '.30-06 improved'!

Dec, Are you referring to Mike at Calton Moor Range?

I spoke to Mike when hunting for a left handed .270/.30-06 earlier this year - he was good to talk to but didn't have anything ready to go - we discussed re-barrel/blue printing and he was going to get back to me with options and never did, so I suspect donor actions are a bit thin on the ground but with luck the situation may have changed!
