Sadly, even in the world of human TB, diagnosis is not always as clear cut as we would like it to be, often treatment is commenced on symptom presentation in addition to the X-ray findings. Sputum testing can take a few days to weeks as the mycobactium tuberculosis doesn't always show up up on first screen - anthing up to six months later in some cases. Added to that, there are any number of "atypical" infections encountered in chest medicine, so I suspect deer will be just as likely to throw up some unusual possible diagnoses.
