    free floating the barrel

Took my rifle to a gunsmith yesterday for screw cutting and he suggested free floating the barrel by basically sanding 2 mm off the stick where the barrel sits. Is this all I need to do? He said bit of Dowling and sandpaper and there you are, it sounds that simple that even I could do it...

Get an appropriate sized socket to use as a former to give a nice round channel. Don't forget to re-seal with varnish or similar.

A barrel channel rasp is the best tool but for a one off a socket and sand paper will work fine.

The clean wood will need to be sealed properly to insure it does not swell and start touching.
