Trial cameras at aldi

I think we might be a little off thread here so lets go back to the Aldi Trail Cams.
Oh yes ! some of the 'stars' of his show actually photograph their 'women' with their mates then complain the action wasn't as good as they expected or a fight breaks out because the 'woman' compares the guys and rates them from 1 to 10 and the lowest scorer reckons he deserves a higher mark but was put off by the flash from the camera or the torch !
That's my last post on this or admin will tell us off for wasting band width nothing to do with Stalking, well Deer Stalking anyway.

Just called in and got one and they look pretty good for 70 quid considering you get a card and batteries included. My place had loads of em in Peterborough.

Will chuck it out in the garden tnite and see what the pic quality is like and post on here,

Bought two on Thursday.

Took them back today for refund.

Both cams had the same problem, every 3-5 pics was scrambled, looked like a split screen, half of picture duplicated into two vertically separated photos. Discussed at length with tech support (good and knowledgeable) but conclusion was try other SD cards, format in camera, otherwise faulty send back. Tried own and supplied SD cards, no resolution.

One cam. did not see the lateral sensors. When in setup mode you should see blue led flashes from side sensors, red flash from forward facing one. One cam did not respond sideways.

Neither camera was reliable in triggering. Tested carefully with me, and my dog. Sometimes worked, mostly didn't.

The LED illumination is not discrete. Very bright red visible light. The LEDs themselves are white/glass clear and very visible in daylight, which makes a nonsense of the camo paint finish.

Very disappointed.

Plenty available at my shop in E. Sussex. Manager takes them back with no questions, seems to know already about the problems.

Lots of other dodgy firmware problems, e.g. switching between off, test and on mode must be done very slowly and allow cam to boot up in test mode first. Otherwise switching off to on directly will result in dead camera.

Also switching to test mode to review images gives MAGINON splash screen with a loud jingle tune played through the speakers, guaranteed to frighten off any nearby quarry.

Suppose to last six months on standby. But I used x8 Sony Eneloop cells freshly charged and the cam was showing low battery after 24 hours.

Pic. quality was OK. Sensor is 5 Mpixels. Can interpolate up to 12 but no reason to do so. Likewise can record "HD" video at 1080p but only 15 fps. Best use 720p at 30 fps but it is very choppy and I suspect it is not 30 fps but perhaps 15 doubled up.

Don't expect too much for £70.

Bought my Maginon trail camera in summer and it was brilliant until the weather turned this winter. The gasket is too thin and does not make it weather proof in our Scottish weather . I have tried removing the gasket and giving a bead of water sealant as used on outside windows.....no good. Once water gets in buggers batteries and camera fails. Thought of several ways to turn this problem around. A thin smear of dubin around the join, gaffer tape around top part of seal or use a plastic container box attach between camera and tree support frame this will give a 360 cover for the join and if still problematic then put cover on the box but cut out the lens area etc. others have bought this camera and may be having the same problem. So would like to hear if you have managed to get around it.before anyone suggests the use of warranty wasn't interested in this lengthy process and rather try to find a solution. In future I would just save longer and purchase one with good reviews.

I broke part of the underside battery cover on my 2013 model maginon cam last year. An email enquiry on 30 June regarding getting a replacement part ended up with me sending back the old one and receiving a replacement same model on 20 July. The actual turnaround between sending the old camera and getting the new one was just over a week. The only downside was not getting postage refunded- only done within UK apparently. I am happy with the service I received.

PM me if you would like the email contact I used.

PS I left one out till late December in wet Irish weather. The only problem is condensation on the exterior of the lens can be very slow to clear resulting in some very frustrating blurred shots of what may have been a magnificent 8 pt sika stag. Does the 2014 have the screw at the rear of the base? I tighten mine very firmly with a coin.

Someone posted a question about these on a facebook group last week,
this is the exact question that was asked
"how much are the Aldi £69-99 trail cams and where can i buy one ?"
theres really no hope for some people
thats farce book people for you,

I've had mine now for about 18 months in total and it's been outside all that time. I've had to bring it home and need to get a refund or get it replaced as it's no longer waterproof and keeps chucking out loads of blurred images, possibly because of condensation on the inside of the lens. If I get a refund or replacement then it's been worth it for the money but if not then I'll be a bit ****ed off

Sense of De Ja Vue or what, mine has been outside for months was in Devon, now up home. Its been exposed to some awfull weather of late in a very exposed site on a bridge across a deep ditch. Anway I noticed it was a little foggedd up so it came home this weekend and i took it apart to dry out, clean. I reassembled using some sticky high pressure sealing grease a thin film on the seal to try and get over the issue, but in all honesty needs some sort of protective case. Unfortunately mine has a broken case clip and was thinking of contacting them for a replacement so was glad to see ION comments.

For the money its an excellent bit of kit.

Intresting to note that roe, foxs and badgers don't notice it but munties appear v sensitive to the LEDs, however mine is located quite low down .

I have had one for six months or so, and do not rate it at all and am about to speak to the manufacturer as it regularly fails. Light blinks on to say it is on then a week or two later return no pics. Tried it at home and it sometimes works.
The motion sensor is very short range compared with my Ltl Acorn .
Spend less than a tenner more and get a LtL Acorn, far superior, have had one out almost all the time for 4 years. The LEDs on the Aldi one are quite bright as well , invisible on the Acorn.

hi Teal

I'm using spy point hd12 cameras, I've made some neoprene insulated and waterproof tie shut covers for mine that cover all but the view screen they work perfectly, they taken a battering out on the marshes as well.
thats worth a try before slinging em

MMmmmmm none of this surprises me. Mate and I bought a couple of electric larder fly zappers from either there or Lidl I think about £8 each The flies seem to think its a custom tanning centre especially for them and flock round it preening themselves

I have been using several Acorns and their clones Maginon for last year now, each camera is encased in a metal security box £25 on the bay and locked to a tree with Masterlock cable locks £4 from Halfords, had not one problem with damp and they have been out 24/7.

Well i took mine back yesterday and got a full refund even though its 18 months old. I had thought of getting it repaired but to be honest where I have had it I knew there were deer there and I wanted the camera to identify the best time to head out looking for them. All the camera told me was that they come at completely random times of day and sporadic times throughout the month so no real help! Just means I'll have to go out more and be out for longer until I catch up with one.

Sent my backplate back for replacement on Thursday, new one waiting for me at home this eve,FOC.

Excellent service
