My son and I arrived at our B and B near Spean Bridge for two days stalking Sika in the last week of September. On the first day as two separate parties we blanked but enjoyed the thrilling whistling sounds as the rut was in full swing.
On the second day we had shot three by lunchtime !
We spied a stag and some hinds and a young stag in a clearing from the opposite hill and sneaked down through the trees to the burn at the bottom. Crossing the burn and up to the bottom of the light coloured grass, I took the shot at 216 m.
Perfect heart shot reaction but it took 5 minutes to find him in the trees. 100 gr nosler partitions in 243 are not petalling enough for my liking although this was the only beast to not have an exit hole in the season so far.
