Not so many years ago Christmas day was just another working day in Scotland , at least for country workers some office staff and possibly some factory workers got Christmas day,but the big celebrations were at New year when we got two days off and sometimes more depending on when New Year landed in the week
In general Christmas was considered a time for kids, New year was for adults.
Christmas for adults consisted of your Christmas dinner after your days work, and possibly going to a watch night service on Chrismas Eve for those that were religious.
Can't remember when exactly but think it was some time in the 1980s before Christmas day became an official holiday up here, at least I never had Christmas day off before that.
by then many were pulling sickies , and making it an official holiday was the logical choice.
Its true that we never did much on Christmas day but you had to turn out
There are many of course who still work Christmas day some by choice, and some because the job demands it some get the choice of either Chrismas or New Year off but not both.
