Wife of deerstalker

Hi there,

im married to a deer stalker who is turning 40 later this year and I have joined the forum so that I can hopefully get some good ideas from you for a brilliant surprise birthday away-break with stalking as a present for him!

thanks in advance!

Welcome to Sd

what is your budget?
how long a trip do you want him to go on?
what country or remain in this country?
how experienced is he?
does he like/have trophies?

Cant beat a trip to the scotish hills for a few days on the hinds. When I was a gamekeeper on the few days I had off I would walk up the hills and just sit and take it all in it was peaceful.

Regards Kev.

Martin's questions will help scope out what sort of stalking trip is going to be most appropriate for your husband. Regardless, he's a lucky chap!

If you're thinking of staying in the UK then, as other posts have said, stalking for a day in Scotland is pretty much a classic. A trip out after red deer on the Hill, ideally where they still use ponies to extract the deer, is on most UK deer stalkers bucket lists! If your husband hasn't done that before then I'm sure he'd be delighted. If you don't want to head right up North then Colin (solway stalker) on here is in Dumfries & Galloway, so not quite such a long haul - I've done the drive from Bury St Edmunds to D&G before and it's easily manageable. There should be lots of choices depending upon budget, how far you want to drive and how long you fancy staying away.

If your husband has already been stalking in Scotland then an alternative might be heading down to the West Country, where red, roe and sika could be on the menu.

Being in Ipswich I'm guessing that a trip out for muntjac and Chinese Water Deer may not be that much out of the ordinary, otherwise they are popular quarry for those who don't normally have access to them.

Another alternative might be a trip out on wild boar? There's quite a choice available in the Classifieds section. Feral goat could be another alternative?

If your husband has already shot all six deer species, as well as wild boar and feral goat, and has a wall full of fantastic trophies, then what about something like a course on butchery, smoking and curing?

Once you have decided on the details of budget, quarry, distance, etc then I am sure people on here will be happy to help.

Emberleaf Knives did this for one of our customers - if he likes his knives this may be suitable.

if he's the man that already has everything then the previous ideas of a stalking trip to Scotland or Ireland are spot on. Perhaps if he's never shot a Chinese Water Deer a couple of days stalking with a specialist guide in the east of England might be good.

Best of luck finding the right thing,

Welcome to the site, I think your husband is a very lucky man and I endorse all of the suggestions made I think they cover pretty much everything.

I would also like to apologise for the earlier idiotic comment, as you can see it has been removed and I shall be contacting the author a little later. As you are the wife of a stalker I expect you realise that the comment made was a not representative of the vast majority of stalkers, in fact a great many of our members contacted admin to complain.

I hope you get the perfect gift for your husband.

John

Question surely is what has he already shot?
What species? Then we can fill in the gaps.

Lest anyone misinterpret tackb's post, it wasn't him that originally made the comment :tiphat:

thanks for that willie ! (wish I'd payed more attention at school!)

yes to clarify I apologised for another members inappropriate comment on behalf of all us 'relatively' normal members!

Thank you!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the ideas and positive feedback-both on this thread and via the private messages, I really appreciate it. I'm working my way through all the options! All the best to you all (and no worries about the plonker's remark ...... the rest of you have all been perfect gentlemen, thank you) :)

Would someone please enlighten me as to the removed remark. I am curious and missed it whilst eating pinto beans cooked in my pressure cooker,a new adventure that is proving to be very yummy.

ATB Bryan.
