Hi does anybody have a good recipe for a 180 grain in a 3006 please ,any help apreciated , thanks

What powders do you have at your disposal?
Why are you shooting such a heavy, stout bullet at deer? ( 1800 fps at 500 yards, the minimum speed to open it up).

I would load the 150-gr for deer, or 165 / 168 gr for boar. I have loaded the Barnes 150 TSX in the .308, and based on that experience with some conventional bullets and the same powder (RL-15), brass, primers and rifle, my guess is that 55.5 gr IMR-4350 for all three bullet weights in the .30-06 is the place I would expect to end up, beginning at 54.0 gr.

You need to be a bit careful with pressures with the Barnes bullets. They recommend a seating depth of at least 50 thou off the lands. Combine this with the fact that a copper bullet is much longer than a standard lead one to be of the same weight and you start to get some very deep seating depths which reduces case volume and subsequently increases pressure.

For UK deer I would look at the 130g or 150g. The 130g is fantastic in the 308
I can second that for the 130g in 308! excellent performance, but has nearly all say, keep them well off the lands.

To be honest it really annoys me and I suspect many others when you are genuinely asking for help about a specific thing , 3006 and people start going on about 308s in a thread where it's got nowt to do with a 308 , thanks

who licked the jam out of your doughnut this morning!

I see a couple of people giving you good advice and a couple giving you a performance endorsement of a bullet that's the same make as your choice in a calibre that is essentially a duplicate of your fabled 30-06 performance wise just in a short action.

if I could be bothered (but as you can't I don't see why I should bother) i could find a ton of data on the tinterweb about loads for your application and post links on this thread.

dropping a bullet weight is good advise , going on barnes website is good advice , suggesting the 308 is loopy in comparison to the 30-06 is bad advice as it's just not true or helpful.

I'm surprised you even need ammo , don't the deer just drop dead at the sight of a 30-06

I don't see anything wrong with 180 grn Barnes for deer. Its my preferred projectile for deer over 180kg when using the 30 06. Its all I'd use on sambar or large red stags in a 30 06. My 06's are sighted in with 180 grn ballistic tips for small deer & up to 140 kg (rusa) & pigs & I just use the barnes when shooting larger stuff without resighting the rifle. Things don't have to be complicated. My loads use 57 grns of ar 2209 for what its worth.

I do believe that as soon as the rifle has been fired you still have a 30 calibre projectile in the air whether it is launched from a 308 or 30/06. The only difference is the dose and type of propellant that is needed to lauch the chosen bullet (which I did not choose to comment on because that was not asked for) If you take the time to consider it, my post relates entirely to the terminal ballistic effect of projectiles that are entirely appropriate for use in your rifle. I am sorry if my attempt to help you has caused annoyance. Next time I will think twice before trying to contribute to something that you may benefit from.

Perhaps you should also consider that a 308 firing a 130g TTSX at the published velocity of 3221 (from Barnes load data) will totally spank the trajectory of a 180g TTSX at 2742 at all reasonable ranges. Perhaps not so loopy after all. Before you complain the bullet data is specific to the BC of the projectiles being considered and does not relate to the factory ammo referred to, ie the 308 american eagle or the 30/06 dead tough. The program I used did not allow me to deselect a factory option.

I'm sorry , but you seem to miss the asked question , I am asking about a 180 grain Barnes bullet , not a 150 and not a 130 , don't want to use a fast load , not bothered about it doing 4000 fps , if I've upset anybody then I'm sorry

Thanks Chris that will help me sort out how much powder to put in said 3006 case to propell the 180 grain bullet out of rifle , cheers
