Please help.....
Have zeroed 223 @ 100 yards, two inch high. 0.7 MOA. Turrets now reset.
Using Hornady 55gr V-max its states on box 3240 fps with 1.4" drop at 100 yards, dead on at 200 yards, and about 7" drop at 300 yards.........
so taking into account my 2" high at 100 yard zero...................how many 1/4 inch moa clicks for:

Why not just use the subtensions to work out your holdover points? Hawke's BRC software has all the info' you need :thumb:
 
Try Strelok or Exterior Ballistics?

EB is pretty good. Gives you the plot tables, charts and the reticule views :thumb:

for the stats you've given the drop at 300 is 5.3" and at 400 is 19.5". Hope this helps

First, if you zero the 55vmax at 200, then it will be 1.4" high at 100 not a 1.4"drop.

Second, 1/4 inch MOA click ??
Is it 1/4"@100yd clicks, or 1/4 MOA clicks ? There is a difference. Also, have you confirmed that your scope adjustments are what they say they are ?
Unless you are using a top end scope, you, more often than not, find that the 1/4 MOA works out to be, for eg. .243" not .2617" which over several clicks, the error will add up.

Have you confirmed that the bullets are doing 3240fps from your gun ? I'd be very surprised if they do exactly what it says 'on the tin'.


What you need to do, if you wasn't to do it right, is,
A, chrono your ammo to get the real velocity.

B, input the correct data, mv, bc etc into a ballistic calculator.

C, confirm that your scope adjustments are what they should be, by doing a box test.

D, get out on a range, or in the field and confirm the actual drops correspond with the data given by the ballistic calculator.

E, make sure the data input into the calculator is all present and correct, rubbish in=rubbish out, this includes the weather variables, station pressure, temp and humidity etc.

F, get out and practice, and gather reliable DOPE, Data Obtained from Previous Engagements.

G, don't expect the '16 clicks to 300' that works today to work spot on tomorrow, at the moment, the air pressure is having vast and rapid changes, enough to make an effect.

H, last but not least, get out and shoot, enjoy it, and learn. The more you practice, the luckier you'll get :)

Here's what Sierra's Infinity 6 says for a 2-inch high zero at 100 yards.

It's usually pretty good for G1 BCs at short distances. POI remains above the POA until ~240 yards HOWEVER...... I agree with everything 'The Tramp' says in the previous post. Your MV andf scope real adjustment changes may well be WAY out and you have no way of knowing until you check them. As a general, but not infallible rule, most US ammo claims are significantly optimistic as they're based on 24 or 26 inch barrel lengths using SAAMI specification test barrels that are significantly 'tighter' than found on your average factory sporting rifle. Scope adjuster values, even on expensive models, are regularly 5-10% adrift, and often MUCH more so in cheaper models.

Incidentally, you say you've zeroed 2-inches, 0.7-MOA high at 100 yards. 2 inches in MOA is 2 divided by 1.047 = 1.91-MOA at this distance.

perhaps I should re zero for dead centre at 100 yards then use strelok which I now have. The app seems pretty good. My problem was that my zero POI was 2" high at 100, which messes up the calculations given using strelok (or any other calculator for that matter)
i did the 2" high thing taking into account MPBR of the round being about 230yds.......therefore bullet will only 'move' no more than 1.5 low or 1.5 high out to 230.....
please note I only really will shoot below 300 at quarry. The reason I wanted to dial up and dial wind age was going to be at an AR500 steel gong

Having second thoughts re. MPBR zero...........
gonna re zero next week at 100 yds dead on. Surely it will then be easier, using ballistic calc to dial up etc
Thats the plan, and sticking to it.
Got nice crow today at 160y. Missed one at approx 305 as wasn't sure of correction. So next week back to plan A.

I only have two scopes with turrets
they are both set to zero for a 100m

everything further is dialled from that zero either on known ranges or LRF' figures
no point having that zero at a relative unknown

all other rifles are "zeroed" for MPBR
usually around 1" at 100yds resulting in an actual zero of between 170-230yds depending on calibre/load
These scopes don't get touched.
if I do need to stretch them further it is a holdover to pull the POI into the target area

in practice I rarely need to as they are stalking/foxing rounds and the range are very rarely over 200yds

combination of the two is asking for confusion IMO
 
forget the 200 zero and sight in bang on at 100m,, then all you need is to do you MOA to work out your turret dial up,,

thanks for all the advice.
Going to zero at 100 yards, then use turrets as they were intended. Using strelok from now too....
