Anyone know of a GSP trainers in the Berkshire area, have contacted various Gun Dog trainers, none of whom seem interested when it comes to GSP's. Mischa is coming on well but would just like to gauge how we are doing and maybe get some pointers (excuse the pun) here and there.
Cheers

They are probably not interested because the majority of them stick to the easier breeds. In my HO never take a HPR to a trainer unless he has succesfully trained these dogs, you are better of with a first class book on the subject and do it yourself. Besides that a dog that has been trained by you has the level of trust in its owner that HPRs need, they do love security and you are that. Good luck, enjoy your dog and above all have fun. Thats what they respond to most.

Most gundog trainers only know the breed they keep or are involved in and what you need are specific HPR trainers. Anyway, I was always told the GSP's were the best of the lot as they are born trained!!!!!! I prefer my LM's!

I wish that were true of Vizslas but its all part of the fun.

I will second Greymaster, seen his dogs run a good few times and they run well and are usually gettin there feet wet at the end. I would think u will have no problem's with him, i think he does specialise in the hprs

(Apologies My english geography is rubbish) But probably well worth a day trip to Rory major at Bryanscroft, Lincs? for a training day or something. The other famous 1 is Andy Cullin, Laochin? Gundogs i think, above Newcastle, think he does (he did anyway) weekend courses on the grouse moors be well worth making a weekend off it and seeing ur dog work on some totally different open country, exactly wot they were breed for. (If u fancy headin North might be worth looking into it shortly as counting will be starting anytime soon on the English moors)

Is there not quite a big hpr club scene down south? A lot off the clubs that run field trials might also run training days (weekly/monthly)

Some trainers will take on hpr's depends on trainer, end of day still just a dog. Actually a few well know and well established trainers/triallers branching into the hpr scene.
Vizslamad, wot HPR books would u reccommend?
I read a few before i got mine and was pretty dissappointed with them all really, or atleast nothing i hadn't read before in 'normal' gundog books, but i supose there is only so much u can write about training a dog and i've read a few books.
Althou Rory's DVD is quite good, but hard to guage ur dog aggainst a dvd

The worst advice i followed with mine was off a top hpr trainer and the best advice of a spaniel trainer, really helped me back on track; like most things in life, all depends on the individuals, both dog, trainer and handler/owner

Her training is coming on very well indeed imo, I am very happy with her. I have read a few good books, Gundog training by Amateurs by Richard Sharpe, The Rough Shooters Dog and Training the Pointer Retriever Gundog both by Micheal Brander, but all seem similar after the read.
However, I would just like someone who knows HPR's to have a look at her and get their opinion, she is my first gundog so I am learning lots as well and would just like to know that I am doing all I should be and she is where she needs to be. I will have a chat with Alan Hender anyway.
Cheers

Hi Mutley, Alan is predominantly a GWP man, try and speak to Janice/Mark de Clifford, or Sue Lamb.

Both run and have run a number of Birkenwald GSPs both in trials and working tests.

In the 'competing' circles unfortunately there is an amount of apathy towards the Birkenwald type GSPs, brought about mainly by the stir Ann Gill caused when she introduced these German dogs to the british circuit with great success, backed up with the American Kennels clubs refusal to register a black GSP (not sure if this has/will change).

I have seen certain judges favour a traditional liver/white dog even when the black dog has performed better, there is also a Titled (Sir) panel judge who loves his black GSPs.

Hope this helps,
