Gents Im thinking/planning on getting a dual purpose dog. I asked a couple of forum contacts their views but I would like to throw this out to a wider view. I was thinking about either a GWP or a HWV. But it looks as if I may go down the HWV route for myself. At present I dont do alot of stalking to warrent a dog just for stalking. I also shoot about 5 stand 1 walk 1 days. So this is the reasoning for my thoughts.

So what are your experiances of a HWV as a dual pupose dog. And what attributes do these dogs have compared to others?

I have a very well bred HWV bitch, retrieves everything, points everything and is impervious to gun noise. But soft as hell and this runs through the breed. Not a dog to train with a stick, quirky bu good at thier job.

thanks for your input, What do you mean "quirky"?

I have had cockers as gundogs and Belgian Malinois as working and competition dogs. Both to me are fairly bomb proof and easy for me to train. The vizsla has taken ages to maturea d if you use any hands on techniques in her training she will scream the place down an make you look a right idiot.

I rmember and article in Shooting times years ago re training unusual breeds as gundogs. It said something like springers, Labs and cocker are like ford escorts, dependable, easy to mainain etc. Other breeds are like having a vintage morris minor in that they will still get you there but at a different pace.

I still rate my bitch, she is a cracking dog and when I was sorting though my dogs rehoming some of my cockers etc I kept her because she is such a character. If I had my time agin I would opt for a male.

Thanks for the explanation.

I think you would find the GWP to be a completely different kettle of fish to the HWV mate. . . The GWP can be stubborn as hell, hard headed and really quite sharp sometimes. I think its fair to say in most cases a GWP needs to know who is boss from the off to get the best from them. . and every know and then they need a reminder. They are not an easy ride for a while. However once they know the score they will work their socks off for you.[/QUOTE]

A Malinois is a breed of Belgian Shepherd, very highly strung. This is me working my dog a few years ago in Holland.

What you see on the video is the exciting phase. The dog has other exercises which include agility, searching for small metal articles such as bullet cases and retrieving them and also searching an area of woodland for a small wooden box and them barking when they find it. They also have to swim the width of a canal, climb out, lay down and come back when called and then retrieve from water.

There is lots of stuff applicable to deer work and I had hoped to train that dog "Sako" for it but he was looking to attack when he heard gunshots :)

in my opinion you are setting yourself up for some seriuos headaches if you go fo the visla it sounds as if this is your first dog.what is wrong with a good old fashioned black lab. i have experianced the hell of a visla. i have experianced the pleasure of labs and springers .

Far from my 1st dog. Ive been brought up with springers since I was 10. I owned my 1st dog at 14. As for a good old fashioned Black lab!!! Dont get me on that subject!!!! Had 1 and never again, lazy, food driven slabbering things.. My wife has 1 she is training as its her 1st dog. I love English springers but as i said dont I dont warrent the need for 2 dogs. I dual purpose dog is the way forward for me.

each to there own i suppose nutty. yes my lab does eat his fare share of food. but he is 100% the most useful beast in my kennels . good luck with the visla
hope he turns out to be a cracker for you . keep hunting

I'll never have another lab. There's just too many health problems with them. Mines awesome. She'll work all day long and then all night if you ask her to, she's well bred from a reputable kennel and she's just started having fits at four years old. Proper not happy about that!

I don't think I'll have anything but HPRs from now on.

What was the issue with your vizla mate?
