Well, a good friend from Denmark was over this week with a group of stalkers out with John of YDS and as Christian wasn't really here to stalk with John he called upon a few friends to take him out. I was last (but not least) to take him out yesterday morning. He arrived at my house for 4:20 and we headed straight out so as not to wake 'her indoors'. Our farm is only 2 mins from my house so we parked up and waited 10 minutes for it to get a little lighter. The first field we stepped into we could see the familiar shape of 2 deer feeding at the far end but it was still far too dark to see what sex they were. We stalked a hedgerow down towards them but the wind was gusting in their direction so they winded us a little and spooked a bit...
I was invited to go deer stalking from a friend this weekend, he was going up on the Friday afternoon and staying until Sunday. I was to follow on the Saturday after I finished work. Yesterday I got in my house from work and practically ran around the house to get my rifle in the bag and ammo and moderator in my back pack. I haven't yet got a deer calibre rifle but when the lights go out the plan was to chase Charlie with my .223. I must of been ready in about five minutes flat. The car was already loaded with my camping gear and filled with fuel. The sun glasses were on as it was bright and the sun was warm through the glass of my window. Things were looking good so far. On the journey to the woodland block I saw rabbits, buzzards...
Well I'm pretty new to deer stalking having just done my DSC1 back in January and had two stalks spying deer but not able to get a shot, I thoroughly enjoyed these days but they still left me looking for my first deer. Well it's been third time lucky for me when I was fortunate enough to be invited by someone locally to go roe stalking with them so here's my story. Most of the ground he has permission on is accessible by 4x4 so we set off in his pick-up glassing the fields and woods for roe. There was plenty movement of roe but all of them either spotted us and disappeared into the woods or they happened to be does. Then we spotted two roe in a field but they were too far away to determine the sex. We parked up in the pickup and...
Sorry title should be THEY'RE BACK. I posted earlier this year asking for sightings of the missing fallow from North Herts. Well I'm happy to report that since to 1st of April the fallow does have returned on mass. Over the past week we've seen a group of 40+ in the middle of the rape fields (well at least what should be rape). This will please the farmers no end I'm sure. I've been involved in deer stalking for nearly 10 years and during this whole time I've had two labs that Have been used for rough (I stress rough) shooting. And over the past few years my youngest dog, now 10, has been picking up on a local shoot. Because most if not all of my early deer shooting was done from high seats and neither were what you would call steady...
Decided last night to visit a small orchard i shoot on. A quick call to the landowner and all cleared for a morning outing and was told he had seen 4 fallow laying up earlier ! Arrived this morning at 4 45, kit on and through the gate. I stalked slowly towards the far end where I have a doe box over looking a clearing of wild flowers. I scanned the orchard Nothing! I moved farther on and scanned a small opening at the top of a plantation of xmas trees. An unfamilar shape stood 50 yards in amongst the small trees! Sticks up and through the scope a set of roe antlers. I tracked down the neck and squeezed off a round from the 270 which dropped him instantly. I dont get to shoot many roe as they are just establishing themselves and have a...
Hello all. We have been requested to provide a brief write up on the new portable back pack high seat tree stand which Scott Country are retailing, and also to supply a video of its operation/set up. Retailing at £179.99 this portable tree stand weighs 12Kgs and can be carried on your back as a back pack into a remote location. Easy to set up, it takes approx 3 minutes to erect or take down, we attempted our set up for the first time. We had our wildlife equipment tester set the tree stand up at a location for a photo shoot, but this was our first attempt at set up so excuse the video, it is not meant to be a professional guide, just a quick insight into how it works. Here are some images of it in use And here is the video...
Evening Gents, Just a quick write up of a Saturday spent with 270wsm and Herbert from this site. I was lucky enough to get a decent Job offer two weeks ago and decided that I deserved a treat. Bizarrely, being a shooter was actually really helpful in the interview, but that is a story for another time. I have known 270WSM (Ade) for a number of years through us both being members of the same range, but up until a couple of Saturdays ago I hadn’t seen him for maybe a year or two. Anyway, we bumped into each other down the range and got chatting and he mentioned he wanted to grass a couple of fallow bucks before the end of the season. At the mentioned of this I arranged to go down last Saturday and also to bring a lad I go...

Mixed feelings today some sad some happy Due to one of the estates I lease being sold I'm off later to take my high seats down all 15 of um ! Still not sure if I will retain the stalking with the new owners but you never know . I have had several good years there so I can't really grumble but its always sad when things you get used to change . The other bad news I just had was a call from a gamekeeper in Wiltshire whome I buy good roebucks from , he has a number of very good areas where he looks after and manages the roe very well and most of these areas produce medals every year , on one of these areas he had at least 4 good bucks one of which was going to be took this season and the other 3 left till next year.Well he was on the...
Up at 4-45am Sunday morning and on my little bit of ground over the border by 5-30, it was a beautiful morning and i didnt care whether i saw any deer or not as it felt so good to be out. I stalked from the far end of the ground which borders land shot over by two other forum members (i think they've shot everything from that end:D) and made my way slowly along the woodland edge, there were cock pheasants arguing, sheep being stupid and buzzards in the sky and then i spotted a roe. Up with the binos but my heart sank a bit when i saw it was a doe, i watched for a minute then another roe appeared from behind a hedge and fed along side her and this one was a buck. They were 300 yds away and the wrong side of the hedge, i crawled 50yds...
I picked up a new bit of ground about 8 months ago, just rabbits at first. I knew there were deer on there but there was, quite understandably trust to be earned from the landowner before things progressed any further. I've worked pretty hard clearing felled trees and was actually offered the 'upgrade' when I delivered some venison sausages i'd made with a bottle of plonk. He said there was another stalker on the ground but that we were both welcome. I met the other stalker in the third week of March when I was out trapping moles on the ground. I wondered over to introduce myself as he was gearing up, having parked next to me & the reception was a little defensive, then frosty when I explained our situation. Anyway, without going...
Had a good stalk with Herbert on a calm and sunny evening recently. The location was in West Herefordshire, in gently undulating farmland with orchards and small coppices. I was familiar with the area having both stalked and rough shot there with Herbert several years ago. We started off in a large orchard, and Herbert immediately spotted several Roe, but they must have seen or heard us as they made a hasty exit. We then stalked along a green lane, which bordered areas of orchard, coppice and scrub-land. It was a fantastic location, with the low sun illuminating everything with a golden glow, and only the sounds of the birds breaking the silence. There were plenty of signs of activity, with numerous fresh slots in the softer...
So I get the call today from a local landowner saying that he's been seeing two bucks on his ground and he's about to put cattle on all of it and they won't be seen until the beasts come off in late October . So off I went for a cracking couple of stalks . Caught up with one six pointer after about an hours stalk on my belly in a hay meadow . Young buck and although he's a six pointer ( just) he was a very poor buck and in bad condition . The second I saw as I walked back to the land rover , I upped him but he ran along a valley and I moved to take a neck shot . Couldn't believe it ! 7 pointer ! .243 did good ! Also saw a lot of does . all in a fantastic day . And the best head of this ground yet ! Please before anyone posts...
Having recently scored a new bit of ground in Dorset I went to give it a once over on Monday having negotiated a couple of days off work. I arrived just after 10am to meet with the shepherd, calrify the boundries and catch up with the landowners who turned out to be very keen on a filling the freezer with venison. While we were talking three sika could be seen milling around in a small copse less than 100 meters away. Visability was patchy through the scrub and I had to restrain myself from being rude and grabbing my bins out the car to see if there was a stag or pricket with them. Once we wrapped discussions up I didn't hang about having seen the sika leave the copse and vanish down the hedgerow so was over the electric fence...
Not really much of a write up I’m afraid. I was kindly invited out for a stalk on Tuesday afternoon/evening at a friend’s farm in West Sussex. He has roe and fallow on the land, but the roe are few and so it was just a few end of season fallow bucks on the menu. We started around 4pm, drove up to two large fields split by a very thin thicket. Immediately we saw a large group of bucks out in the middle, approx. 300m away. Unfortunately the wind wasn’t in our favour and they got up and moved off at a leisurely pace into the far woodland. We waited a while and then decided to flank round them and come at them with the wind in our favour. After stalking for 30 mins through the woodland, we came across the group. About 20 bucks, some...
I just wanted to put pen to paper to thank Brian for the prize I took on Monday evening and Tuesday morning of this week... To say that we saw both ends of the Devon weather spectrum really doesn't do it justice! Monday evening, I tabbed into "Tree" seat early evening, just as the mist and fog was rolling in, and by 19:30 the rain was coming across the land horizontally right to left, and absolutely everything got soaked. I was watching a small herd of Fallow, in the left field, and had ranged them at between 150 and 180 yards. Bread and butter shot if you can sex the b*ggers, but every time I lifted my optics, the lenses were soaked before I could spot a willy. By now it was getting dark as well, and to then suddenly have one walk...
