Just spotted this in the Q&A section of an ad on French website naturabuy.fr, in this ad for a pump-action .35 Whelen rifle.

Getting back to the original nut jobs insistance that the rifle is a) chambered in 7x64 but designed to take multiple calibres; and b) he has fired both .270 and 7x64 through it.
a) It's a 7x64 rifle but the magazine may well be marked with .270, 7x64, 30-06, (and I'm guessing possibly 9.3x62 being the missing one), as those cartridges have near enough overall case dimensions other than calibre to utilise a single magazine.
b) Looking at the differences between the 7x64 and the .270, it appears that it might be possible to chamber and fire a .270 in the rifle as other than the .284 bullet compared to .277 the dimensions are very close. It's a semi-auto as well so the chamber might be a bit on the 'generous' side, which would help.
I doubt he's tried 30-06 or 9.3x62 though, as they'd not chamber - or he's already missing part of the action, (and some of his anatomy!).

Pine Marten will be able to confirm, but there's a later exchange with another potential buyer who does take the p!ss out of our erstwhile multicalibre shooter.
Then again he might just be taking the old adage of 'Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!' to it's ultimate, (if potentially fatal) conclusion!

Orion may be right, in that the seller is just trying to say that the rifle action and magazine can handle 7x64, .270 and .30-06. It does not say which Browning model this is, but Browning offers lots of replacement barrels for its rifles, screw in, press fit, and quick change slip in ( like the BLR takedown ). There must be at least 50 barrels listed for the Shorttrac in this year's catalog.

No, I don't think he's that smart. From the translated exchange he obviously thinks that his 7x64 can shoot any of those rounds! IMO he might just be putting .270 through a 7x64 and getting away with it. No mention of switch barrels by him either, so you're being very charitable to mention that some Brownings have that feature.

He's obviously a halfwit to be honest. I worry about his safety and that of people who hunt with him. But I also don't really understand why he's doing what he's doing. Maybe just because there was a special offer on .270 and not on 7x64. Idiot.

no really, I honestly think the manufacturers have a lesson to be learnt here. Who's to say all hunters/shooters are the crispiest cookies in the jar? there are bound to be quite a few soggy one's out there,,we could also call them dumbshits if you like, but any derogatory and condescending term will do just fine for the purpose of this exercise.
If it's not a switch barrel system, what's the point of multiple cartridge labelling on mags? IMHO, not a good idea in the off chance such an individual as described gets the wrong idea.

Alot of 308 is fired through 3006 rifles here in Norway every year.Usually by mistake.The old Mausers that were rebarreled into 3006 have "Kal 7.62mm" on the side of them to distinguish them from their 7.92 predecessors .Well to most people 7.62 translates into 7.62X51 Nato,never heard of a 98 exploding and normally the bullet hits the target.We have a collection of the "formed cases" at the range.

To be fair there is a lot of this sort of thing about in shooting and a lot of "experts" writing in well recognized sources make statements about shooting and ballistics which, unless the laws of physics have changed recently, simply can not be true. If paid experts are allowed to talk rubbish it is hardly any surprise that people with a casual interest might get it a little wrong.
