Airgun laws (ammunition and declaration of weapon)

Hi,
I have full firearms licence and bought a Diana Firebird so my eldest boy can take up shooting. Do I require to take my licence to the dealer when purchasing ammunition? Also the seller advised I don't need to declare it until my next renewal is this correct??

Thanks in advance.

Crikey. I didn't realise that you had to show your certificate to buy air gun pellets. What happens if you decide to make your own? do you have to show yourself your own certificate? I assume that you don't have to enter air ammunition onto your certificate? Or do you?

Yours truly,

Confused from England.

You only have to be 18 to buy pellets,no need to show any licence.Although you can hold any current airguns with your FAC/SGC until renewal if you want to buy one you will need the new AWC.

Airgun ammunition is not covered by the air weapons licensing legislation. The words "ammunition" or "pellets" do not appear anywhere in the legislation
Anyone can buy pellets
If you have a current FAC or SGC you can continue to hold and use any airguns in your possession, but not acquire any more.
When your FAC/SGC expires you need to decide if you want to apply for an air weapons certificate.
If you do and it is coterminus with your FAC/SGC the cost is £5
If you don't but decide at a later date to apply for an air weapons license it will cost you £72

Just buy pellets online...? Shouldn't need a license for pellets

Until the Scottish parliament imposes a ban of delivery to Scottish postcodes, making pellet purchases a shop face to face purchase.

Only a matter of time! I find the whole thing bizarre.

They would be better educating people than creating new laws...

Thanks for all your coments guys, some interesting views on this! The whole thing is crazy in my opinion as the clowns that are shooting people with them will continue to do so and they won't be applying for the required licence.

£72 for an airgun licence in Scotland!!! That is more than I paid for my coterminous renewal. The whole Scottish Airgun thing is bizarre to say the least.

Well, that's the Scottish Nazi Party for you - control freaks, every one of them.
And by the way, if you come up to Scotland with your shotgun, rifle and air rifle, you'll need a visitor's permit for the air rifle - but nothing for the far more potentially dangerous shotgun and rifle

The lunatics have been running the asylum for many years now, north and south of the wall.

But I'm sorry to say my question is this, with all the faff of owning an air gun in scotland why would you bother ?
To me it, sitting down here in the south, it seems no more hassle to go straight to a rimfire.

Neil. :)

I don't know how easy it is get get an open certificate in Scotland for a rimfire, but the advantage of an air rifle for vermin control is you can use it in barns and other buildings controlling rats without fear of ricochet.
Also you can buy 500 pellets for less than 50 .22LR subsonics.

Mind you if I were going to buy an air rifle in Scotland I think I would go for a FAC rated one. No point in getting a non FAC one if you need to get a ticket for it.

My two lads have a very nice HW30 but now are members of the local rifle club and use either the 22LR or something more amusing.

Its less hassle to own a .22rf in Scotland now than to own a sluggy.
Its a shame because i am sure that we all started shooting as kids with air rifles and learned of safety aspects on the way
but for me i will now stick to the rimfire. as my air rifle is now living in sunny Cornwall.
Where will it all end......

I went down the FAC route when I got my air rifle a few years ago. Glad I did. If you have an airgun and an FAC license I would consider getting your airgun tuned to FAC levels.
