new custom foxing rifle

hello guys

I am going to have a custom foxing rifle build but I am undecided on the calibre

I am thinking something different like 6mm ppc or 6mm norma bench rest

I am not worried about hyper velocity rounds like the 220 swift and I have had a 22-250 previously

any advice welcome guys on these 2 rounds a si have had nothing to do with them in the past

or even a 6.5x47 lapua

many thanks

ben

Just foxes?
6.5 seems like overkill but there you go.
I'd go a 6mm PPC or Rem BR. Slow twist, high velocities and light projectiles 70gn or 90 max. They will buck the wind and are super accurate without being over the top.

223 what more do you need ? SAKO carbonlite frame, jewelled trigger, fluted bolt stainless, cherokoted black metalwork, with a carbon wrapped shillen barrel 1.8 twist, job done...

What distance are you going to be shooting? Going up to a 6.5Lap will only cost you more in components than a 223 and not really give you anything sub 300yards (or even a bit more). If you want to shoot them from half a mile away than maybe it makes more sense.

thanks for the replies

I will be shooting at any range for foxes

fancy a 6mm as I have never had one and I want something different to the crowds

I currently shoot 6.5x55 for roe and 30-06 for everything bigger

.20 either tac or prac, fantastic foxing round and a little different if it's a build you want

got 2 20 tac's , one nv one day time, don't need anymore than them to do the job, bunnies out past 300 and foxes at 250 no bother,

40 gr pill and a good medium load, and it will last you years,

i also have 6mm br, great round, but you don't need a big bang for a fox, just an accurate one,

Easy .22-250 or .243. Don't over complicate things. .22-250 is probably where you should be if it's just foxes.

Tim

.22BR Ben, excellent cartridge and extremely efficient fox killer, mine has a 24" HV barrel on a Stiller action, 55grn SMKs at 3460fps and .250 MOA accuracy

6BR with Nosler 70 BT gets my vote. Thats what I plan to use next season on the foxes until fur is at prime and then the 17 Rem will take over.

Decisions, Decisions!
Only you can answer your question we can only add to your confusion!
Having been in a similar situation I have a 6ppc with a 1 in 12 barrel, single shot, GRS stock. It utilises 58 gr v max to 80gr Bergers but mostly 65 vmax and 68 gr for target. Having several rifles in varying calibres this one always puts a big grin on my face and would be the one I'd be most reluctant to part with.

Have fun

I have a br that runs the same bullet and I have also thought of dropping the drone 10x on it but I would have to have the barrel taken from 25" to 22 and a new over barrel mod as well just to keep it usable from the truck. so in all honesty the 20 tac will do what the br will at the same range...that being 250 max and that is drop um :)

If its only for fox! Id say 17remington. Or as an all round rifle for fox and roe (scotland ) 22ppc. 17remington sako75 was the best fox gun ive ever used. Zero recoil and dumped every fox.

6mmBR all day long, no fire forming and more accurate than anything else out there. Anyone who has shot a good 6mm BR will know what I mean.

I'm having a 22BR built at the moment for exactly that job. 69grain Sierra TMK should run about 3300fps in a 9 twist barrel. Flat enough and much better for wind than the 50/55's.

I have a 6.5 Lapua and it's not the best tool for that job. Also have a 6mm-6.5 Lapua and that is fantastic. Has been my fox rifle for 6 or 7 years shooting 70 BK at 3650fps. It is more than is required to do the job however so is being promoted to Munty, Roe and Fallow with the 22BR taking it's place.

I currently use a custom 6x47lapua as a foxing gun but I will be going back to a 22-250 when the barrel is done . It won't be the straight 22-250 but will be the 22-250 AI.
