My old Deerhunter trousers have been fine but seen a lot of action and plenty of repairs along the way - time for a new pair.

What are folk wearing and what do they recommend? Mainly lowland / woodland stalking, wouldn't normally be out if it's lashing it down, but waterproof knees / lower legs would be useful.

I have pro hunter for when it's wet or cold but for other times I simply have a pair of viper camo military trousers. They have a removable plastic knee pad which is great for crawling around, really protects your knees. Loads of pockets for things but on downside that are not waterproof

Harkila Extreme, if you can still get them. Cost makes the eyes water a bit though. Mine are now eight years old, and the leather front panels are well ripped by brambles etc. Still toasty warm, dry, comfortable and quiet. Much too warm for summer though.

As Uncle Norm says, the Harkila Extreme are great if you can get them.

For summer I normally wear thinner style trousers such as the Berghaus combats in olive green. Nice and light, quick drying if you get caught out in a shower, and pockets secured with zips rather than velcro.

A lot will depend on your thermal needs. I have tried pro hunter etc and they are just too hot for winter stalking down south. I have some much lighter Sealand Keepers now and they are also hot and sweaty 90% of the time. My DSC2 fella suggested natural fibers and I am looking to go that way. I was doing 4hour+ stalks in November for DSC2 and I looked like a drowned rat in my Keeper trousers and jacket over a T shirt and that's despite it not raining one drop :D

These but in the all khaki version:

Wash at 40c when Spring arrives to remove the Greenland Wax for a lightweight & breathable summer pant. Re-proof for Autumn/Early Winter use.

Fjallraven Vidda Pro as per photo above. I also wash to remove the wax when Spring arrives but then wash in NikWax Cotton Proof for the summer months to repel light showers.

511 Tactical are great for Summer use but you have to wear them for a year or so before that get quiet enough.

I too use these, but occasionally Cotton Proof - I have never tried Greenland Wax - winter time I just wear a pair of merino long johns on underneath. They are not water proof, but dry very quickly. To be honest I don't mind damp legs as I prefer to be a touch cold than too hot.

Cheers for the suggestions so far. Don't need anything too warm, as will wear a fleece base layer underneath if I'm sat in a high seat in winter

Just picked up these from John Norris for £44. Not tried them yet but look good for summer with zipped vents on the legs for cooling.

Seeland Prevail Vent Trousers are designed to be completely flexible and breathable when active. These unlined trousers are the perfect choice for summer use as they have a DWR treatment on the fabric but don't have a waterproof membrane. Great for those who are out and about with plenty of pockets for storage and stretch panels for a great fit and ease of movement. So, whether you are shooting, stalking or simply out on the hill, these are a great choice of trouser.

I was in Decathlon the other day and did wonder whether some of their stuff might be OK for a season or two, seeing as it was so cheap. Any particular model strike you as being good?

Can't remember the exact models ...I bought pair of the unlined real tree and olive ones , ok for just general garden dog walking etc or evening stalk .....and a pair of the lined olive ones which feel more substantial all very quiet comfy ....then the pair I bought which were quite durable outer lined knees , lined inside are fantastic for around £45 if I remember correctly .....maybe bit warm in summer days and a wee bit noisy but maybe they will soften up with use

have a look at shooterking, they have a winter and summer trouser, I bought the summer trousers and they are brilliant, punching well above there price range. I find them very similar quality to my pro hunters only not as sweaty.

All the years i stalked in England, summer and winter i wore moleskin trouser. Only if I'm standing about in the forest and its cold and wet do i wear my prohunter gear. All my dog work on the pheasants i wear my moleskins and wax cotton treggins
