The Deer Initiative - Ignorance or Clever Pension Funding

' Eric Hamburger. Interesting that your DMG eventually folded.
I was a founder back in the 1980''s of the East Hampshire Deer Management Society, much to their credit I noticed that it was only this year that their website was taken down, so I assume they also have ceased to function.

You asked for contact details that may help no mention of how many phone calls or emails you had already sent.

Regards SDM

Just out of interest, DMG's, who sets them up?

And once this information is collated and supplied to the 'DMG' what is done with it?

I have set up several DMG's all of which continue to run effectively and involve several people who are on the SD.
One in particular I run in conjunction with the DI who we coordinate collaborative culls with in the general area. It works particularly well with Fallow. Some of the local lads were undoubtedly worried when they lost their ground, but were also undoubtedly surprised when I took them on and trained them through dsc 2 and now pay them for their efforts!
Happy estate, happy stalkers and effective deer management from a bunch of like minded guys who work hard and look after each other as a team.
How could that not work?

Any one can start a DMG. And with no knowledge of deer. Drive around advertising you are a "deer manager" And try and steal folks ground by telling porkys to farmers or land owners. And say the current shooters are not doing a good job. And all this Because you couldny get yer own ground. ( had a few at the door)
This happens up and down the country.:-|

As most deer managers are actually just freezer fillers who continually pick up ground that they rarely set foot on I suspect that as often as not they wouldn't be telling porkies at all.

Can't say I've ever seen any landowners fall for that sort of tactic.
Mine were gained by invite or by interview for advertised contact.

Most wont. I am highlighting the fact that. Any one can call them selves a DMG and try to use it to gain access to ground or to gain information on others ground.
Cut throat tactics. The amount of folk who chap doors promising the earth is not real. while telling you a load of crap about deer.

I was very sceptical when a DMG took over our stalking ground 10,000 acres and the estate had no choice but to offer out the stalking because of various issues which would take an essay to write , we got asked to join the DMG because local knowledge is invaluable and we proved we could manage the deer and fulfil the DMG directive for that estate ,
although experienced I lacked some of the paperwork required by the estate and over 12 months I was able to gain qualifications giving me extra skills , I've met some interesting guys and girls through the DMG and continue learn about deer , and deer management it's not all culling
deer we are doing impact assessments working closely with the est forestry dept and Di
eyes and ears open mouth shut worked for me thanks DMG

So how does a DMG take over YOUR ground? Many groups do a sterling service. I am on about the groups that get together down the pub. Who have no land them selves.
But giving a title/name they think they can chap doors and spout about lack of control on the ground and they will do better ECT.
No thought given to proper deer management. Just chancers trying to get a bit of ground using the DMG name to sound Important.
I am pretty sure this happens all over.

In our case the forestry dept took over the deer management responsibility on the est the requirements and legislation to fulfill the red tape we where never going to meet the criteria and so the job went out to contract and a DMG was appointed, basically many big est use the FC criteria as a benchmark to start from and if they don't now they will ....... H&S !!

There are numerous reason as to why a DMG would take over your ground. Sale of the land to the next door farm that already has a DMG set up, Death of the land owner who's son takes over and has different tolerance levels, a change in direction of the farm and therefore deer tolerance levels need to change.....I could go on. No stalker who has deer stalking rites should be so naïve as to think that it's their's forever unless they own it themselves. You may think that you're doing a grand job but a new owner or farm manager or keeper may have a different opinion of you of the job you're doing? They may think that you're shooting too few or even too many?
Of cause a DMG usually results in you losing your stalking and coming on here expressing your disgust, however clearly this may also present a great opportunity to actually join the group and learn from other like minded people who know more than you do (and/or are better qualified than you) and gain some new friends in the process. Joining a team can be very rewarding and you could actually end up with more stalking than you had before? Either way, life is too short to sit around moaning about how unfair it all is.

I have never lost any ground to any DMG. Like I say some are a benifit and some are just made up.

UPDATE

Having read all the posts and replies to my original post I admit I may have jumped the Gun ! pardon the pun, I have spoke to Steve Griffiths from the DI and we are arranging a meeting to sit down and discuss things regarding the area in question and maybe work together. I also had a very good and informative telephone conversation with a forum member regarding deer stalking and the DI and the benefits they can bring to the table etc.

Although it may have opened a can of worms it did eventually get a response to my phone calls and emails. Perhaps a little more digging and research in the future will help me before a go on one :???:

I have always found Steve Griffiths to be very helpful. Not always easy to get hold of, but when you do he is always willing to help out in any way he can.

when your passionate about something ones first response can often be knee jerk
glad you've moved on to some sort of communication
kind regards Norma
