Bi-focal glasses and telescopic sights

Is it normal practice to where your bi-focal glasses when looking through your rifle's telescopic scope? I have just started wearing glasses and can't decide if I shoot better with or without! Any views, pardon the pun would be helpful. Thanks.

My glasses are varifocal and mainly for reading as my distance vision is fairly good so I avoid using them for shooting due to the issues with using binoculars more than anything else as I don’t like the reduced field of view. The other advantage is that the rain is also less bother.

I have worn glasses for 50 years and for quiet a time now have worn varifocals I think I'm on my fourth pair now.
I don't have any problem with either binoculars or my telescopic sights.
Yes the rain is a nuisance on your glasses but it is on your binoculars and sight but you manage with them glasses or not.
Just don't scrimp on the lenses get the one for the bigger field of view etc.

Just started with the varifocals myself. As long as you maintain the same rifle hold and your glasses haven’t slid down your nose, you should be looking through the same part of the lense each time. Adjust the objective to that position and that’s it, apart from the rain !

Thanks for this, I think I will carry on wearing the glasses and see how I get on. Thanks again for your comments.

I use vari vocal and like another poster these are mainly for close up stuff. Can were them when shooting as I see split cross hairs

Glasses are just a pain full stop. I couldn't get used to poking myself in the eyes so contacts weren't a solution for me unfortunately.
What I found best option for me, you may agree or disagree, was to buy some cheapo readers (+1 for me) that gave good general correction and didn't leave me in tears if I lost them. I use my bins and scopes without glasses and just place them on the ground when prone or next to me on a wall etc.

I wear varifocals and if possible never wear them for shooting just single vision specs. I can get away with varifocals if I am resting on bag/sticks but it depends on how critical your scope is to eye position. At night then its absolute pain and also depends on what type of varifocals you have.

So answer is I have a pair of distant vision specs for shooting and as I am short sighted just take them off for any close up work so no issues. Also I have found that it is not a good idea to try and play tennis in varifocals.

I have all three options! Normal wear varifocals, single prescription for shooting and finally contacts. Much will of course depend on your own particular prescription but as far as I'm concerned contacts are the best followed by the varis. The single prescription jobs are very good but I never remember to take them!

Used to have bifocals for 20 years never a problem only with rain or midges. Developed cataracts so had both eyes done and that was fantastic. The Opticians keep telling me that glasses would enhance my long vision and reading. To be honest my long vision is great and I just used 2X for reading on some occasions, no problems. I just wish I had never gone to an opticians 30 years ago because I needed reading glasses, I ended up with differing vision in both eyes after a year or two which snookered me if ever I took my glasses off. Since cataract op just had to have a little laser treatment due to a membrane growth but spot on again

Just my two penny worth, I cannot get on with varifocals at all so have the biggest lens single focus specs you can buy as looking through the top edge of normal specs through a scope sends all sorts of weird effects to the eye, the plus with big lenses is also your peripheral vision is much better.

I take mine off to shoot and binoculars… No real reason, just never tried with… If you're in a stand it's not a problem… I could see the pain if moving…. Guess I need to start practicing with them on myself...
