BASC urges members to help fight .50-cal ban

BASC is telling members it’s not too late to help try to stop the proposed ban on .50 calibre rifles.

The government’s decision to pull a debate on the Report stage of the Offensive Weapons Bill on Monday has allowed more time to challenge the prohibition.

BASC is asking members to urge their MPs to sign amendments to the Bill submitted by Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP. You can find out who your MP is and their contact details here.

Christopher Graffius, BASC’s executive director of communications and public affairs, said: “The government, on police advice, is seeking to ban .50-calibre rifles based on imposing a maximum muzzle energy of 10,000ft/lbs (13,600J). BASC believes this is not an evidence-based decision.

“BASC is challenging the proposed ban on behalf of those shooters who currently own and lawfully use .50-cals without posing any criminal or national security threat.

“But more than that, those shooters who may never wish to own a .50-cal should also be alive to the dangers of a prohibition that would allow an unsympathetic government to reduce the energy limit further to ban smaller-calibre rifles used for deer stalking and pest control.

“BASC has been working with MPs and other shooting organisations to amend the Bill by deleting the ban and instead introduce a higher security requirement for the owners of such rifles.

“This delay gives us a chance for BASC members to contact those MPs who have still not signed Sir Geoffrey’s amendments to request their support. The more names, the better. We will not get another chance at this.”

Debbie thanks for your efforts, but please see the comments from other forum members, I personaly signed this and informed my MP ages ago, so it is yet again BASC is last of the mark to take action in favour of shooters, exactly the reason I did not renew with BASC after years of supporting you
RIP BASC

Not last off the mark, this issue has been on the BASC web site for ages, you and others simply did not see it I guess

Further update on the BASC website today

David not everyone on here is a member or visits the website so by putting it here later you’re giving the mudslingers more mud, can’t win whatever you do.

David,

Some regular updates of the progress of this bill would be appreciated. Posted on this forum.

Glad I got rid of mine earlier this year before the bottom falls out of the market..

I cannot understand the reasoning behind the proposed ban...The use of .50 cals is so restrictive and unless its strapped to the back of Toyota Hilux I cannot understand why they want to ban them.

There aren't that many places that have been deemed suitable to shoot them other than military range days or at an approved club/range

the ammunition is not readily available at your local RFD

The actual firearms are pretty hard to come by.

and then the process of getting a variation to own one is another matter all together...

Unless Teresa thinks we are all going to run amok on the streets and plan an up rising to bring about a fall in her Govt????????????? now that's a thought................

I don't need it, as I do read those proceedings. Though it is a long job to do so. And I'd prefer not to have to
So having a summary from an organisation working directly on the case, would save a lot of leg work.

Good news after yesterday in Parliament!
Well done to EVERYONE who lifted a finger (and shame on those who shoot and didn't). Looks like all the hard work is paying off. Not out of the woods yet but shooting is in a much stronger position.

The big thing to come out of this is, that the whole of the shooting community have united against a threat.
Even if this is currenty a threat against a very niche part of the sport, it's been seen for what it is. The thin end of a very big wedge.

And it was mostly done through social media, rather than organisations. But we have had to suffer so many losses, before social media came about. A shame we have never had one unifying organisation, as they have in the US.
